Quickfire National Online Yearling Sale Rounds to a Close

Demand for emerging sires was evident throughout NZB’s 2025 National Online Yearling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus, which saw 102 lots catalogued in a quickfire digital session.

Siring his first Group One winner over the weekend in Leica Lucy (NZ), emerging sire Derryn was responsible for the top priced lot secured during the digital sale, with the striking grey filly out of Only In Jakarta (Lot 26) selling for $60,000 from Leanach Lodge’s draft.

The second highlight of the Sale came early when Lot 4, a handsome colt by Sword of State was secured by Pike Racing for $35,000 from Highline Thoroughbred’s draft.

Other top prices were secured by progeny of quality New Zealand sires Ardrossan, Almanzor, Satono Aladdin, Armory and Tarzino.

NZB’s Bloodstock Sales Manager Kane Jones commented on the online session.

“It was pretty tough going tonight, there’s no hiding from that. Things aren’t easy out there, and that’s really affecting the middle to lower market in particular – it’s a global theme.”

“We were satisfied with the overall interest and proud of the work our team put in, but found the buyers to be incredibly selective, and they could afford to be,” he added.

“As always, quality horses were well identified and sold accordingly.

“I would like to commend and sincerely thank those buyers who participated and wish them the very best of luck with their purchases. I have no doubt we’ll see some smart horses come out of the Sale.”

All yearlings purchased are eligible to be nominated for NZB’s lucrative Karaka Millions Series. Just nine short months after this virtual sale-ring appearance, graduates can compete for a share of the $1m TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m), the $1.5m TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m), as well as the NZB Mega Maiden Bonus Series with $1m in bonuses up for grabs across 40 maiden races each season. Entries close Monday 30 June 2025.

As a one-off, NZTBA have offered to extend the early bird offer for entries to the Entain-NZB Insurance Pearl Series for all fillies offered in the National Online Yearling Sale. Buyers will have until 5pm (NZT) this Thursday 3 April to secure entry at the discounted rate of $1,000 + GST — a saving of $500 + GST.

Attention now turns to the National Weanling Sale set to take place at Karaka on 26 June. Entries for the National Weanling Sale are now open via NZB's online portal at portal.nzb.co.nz and close 24 April 2025. 

While entries for the National Online Breeding Stock Sale on Gavelhouse Plus will open early June and close Tuesday 17 June, while the catalogue will go live on Friday 27 June and bidding closes from 7pm (NZT) on Wednesday 9 July.
