Record Turnover for South Island Sale

New Zealand Bloodstock's annual South Island Sale in Christchurch saw a broad buying bench contributing to a record turnover for this Sale.

In a day of mixed results, the highlight of the Sale came early in the day when Berkley Stud's Lot 10, a two year old Howbaddouwantit colt out of Scenic Victoria, sold for $52,000 to New Zealand Bloodstock as agent. This colt is one of many who will be pin-hooked for the Ready to Run two year old sale at Karaka in November.

This year's two year old Select Session average and aggregate were both up a fraction on last year, with the final Select session aggregate increased by $213,550 for six more horses sold.

Predominantly a domestic buying bench, there was still a strong presence of Australian and Asian buyers onsite in Christchurch. New Zealand Bloodstock's Marketing and PR Manager, Petrea Vela commented, "There was a good turnout of local and internationals buyers here however across the board they were selective about what they wanted to buy. There was plenty of demand for the better horses while those weaker pedigrees and poorer types faced a tougher market."

A selection of New Zealand agents and trainers from throughout the country were present and provided good competition for the overseas visitors. This year's leading buyer, John Wallace from Queensland, will take home four horses for an aggregate spend of $167,000. This includes the second equal highest priced 2YO, a colt by Iglesia out of the Spectrum mare, Snasta for $45,000. Stephen Marsh, son of Singapore Derby winning trainer, Bruce Marsh, featured as the leading individual New Zealand buyer after purchasing three horses for a total spend of $72,000.

Vendor of the Sale's top priced lot, Berkley Stud ended the day as the overall leading vendor by aggregate with a total of nine horses sold for $215,000 while North Island's Curraghmore Stud was the second leading vendor. Curraghmore's highest priced offering was Lot 86, a Pins gelding out of Guinness Affair, who sold for $42,000 to leading buyer John Wallace.

Although, there was a decrease in the average and clearance rates at the conclusion of the complete 2YO session, aggregate was still well up on last year's figure with a 16% increase for a total of 105 lots sold. At the conclusion of the Sale clearance rate improved to be 2% lower than last year at 63%.

Vendors and buyers can now look forward to the Spring Bloodstock Sale which will be held in little over a week, on Sunday 21 August at Karaka. The sale features over 160 horses including the Fayette Park broodmare dispersal.
