It has been a sensational conclusion to the 2007 Premier Sale at Karaka, with the aggregate, median and average shattering previous records.
The two-day Premier Sale featured 459 catalogued lots, with 363 sold for an all-time record Premier Sale aggregate of NZ$56,834,000. This is 14% up on last year's aggregate of NZ$49,743,000 for 395 lots sold, and topped theprevious record for this Sale of NZ$55,020,000 for 429 lots sold in 2000.
The final Premier session average was NZ$156,567 up 24% from NZ$127,072 last year, also up 23% on the previous record average of NZ$128,252 when Don Eduardo topped the Sale at NZ$3.6m in 2000.
The all-important Sale median finished up at NZ$110,000 up 38% from last year's NZ$80,000, and up 22% on the record of NZ$90,000. The clearance rate was apleasing 84%, up from 81% in 2006.
New Zealand Bloodstock Marketing Manager, Petrea Vela, was delighted with the outcome of the Sale, "It has been a sensational result for the industry, with record returns to vendors and a strong median and clearance rate showing that there was genuine strength and depth to the market. A combination of marketing strategies, the new Karaka Million race and a revival of confidence in our domestic industry has paid dividends for our Sale this year and it is heartening to see both buyers and vendors pleased with the outcome."
"Particularly pleasing was the buying bench assembled at Karaka, one of the strongest we have seen here in some time. There was overwhelming demand for good quality bloodstock, continuing a trend we have seen around the world over the past months. New Zealand buyers were also out in force which we hope will continue throughout the rest of the week at Karaka."
TheSale featured four seven-figure yearlings, highlighted late on Day Two by the colt from iconic New Zealand racemare, Sunline, by New Zealand champion sire, Zabeel, which topped the Sale at $2,000,000 to become the third highest priced horse ever sold at Karaka.

Purchaser Don Ha, a real estate broker from Auckland, said he only decided yesterday to target the colt and looked at him for the first time today."I was motivated by the success of horses like Darci Brahma and thought there is only one opportunity to buy a horse like this. I plan to form a syndicate to race him and, with his pedigree, keep him as a future stallion prospect."
In racing seven years, previously the most Ha has ever spent on a horse was NZ$60,000, but he said he had no limit on his budget for this colt. Ha has offered the colt to part-owner, Stephen McKee to train. "It was a bolt out of the blue when he asked me but of course I'm overjoyed. It couldn't really get any better," said McKee.
Two other colts alsopassed the magical million dollar mark today, the first of the daybeing a Redoute's Choice colt from Mascara Magic bought by Peter Moody for NZ$1,300,000 for a syndicate of Australasian owners.
Moody enthused, "He is a lovely horse, with quite a bit of Danehill about him, butvery athletic with a good attitude. He is a good racehorse for Australia and a good stallion prospect for New Zealand. He's coped phenomenally well at the Sale and an attitude like that goes a long way towards making a good racehorse."
At Lot 314, a Lonhro colt from Royal Academy mare, Palme d'Or, fetched NZ$1,050,000 to the bid of New Zealand trainer, Graeme Stubbings. From the family of Belle du Jour, the colt was offered by Ascot Farm.
The leading buyer of the Premier Salefor the second year was David Ellis with 16 yearlings purchased for an aggregate of NZ$4,805,5000, including the top lot of Day One, a colt by Stravinsky from Melbourne and Caulfield Cups winner, Ethereal. The coltbred by Peter and Philip Vela'sPencarrow Stud was bought by Ellis for NZ$1,300,000.
Second leading buyer was the Hong Kong Jockey Club, securing 24 yearlings for both the HKJC International Sale and the newly re-introduced Subscription Griffen Scheme. The HKJC's top priced yearling was Lot 425, a colt by O'Reilly from The Grin (Grosvenor), a brother to 2003 Champion 3YO, The Jewel, and second top 2YO colt in New Zealand in 2006, The One. He is destined for the HKJC International Sale in December.
With more than 50% of purchases destined offshore, the results sheets recorded buyers from England, Ireland, Japan, Singapore, the United Statesand right across Australia and New Zealand.
The leading vendor by average was Bruce and Maureen Harvey's Ascot Farm, who sold 14 yearlings for a total of NZ$3,850,000. The leading vendor by aggregate for the 26th year in a row was Sir Patrick Hogan's Cambridge Stud, vendor of 41 yearlings for NZ$8,915,000 and an average of NZ$217,439, including the top priced Sunline colt.
Once again it was Australian sire Redoute's Choice who was in hot demand, featuring at the top of the sires list with 6 sold for an average of NZ$676,667. First season sire, Lonhro, featured second with three sold for an average of NZ$410,000.
