Relatives to Saturday Standouts at Karaka 2008
30 October 2007
Two of Saturday's standout performers at Trentham's Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes meeting will be represented by half-brothers at the National Yearling Sales at Karaka in 2008.
Following a hard fought battle to the line with race favourite Alamosa, it was Rios (Hussonet x Gussy Godiva) that dipped his nose in time to secure the G2 Wellington Thoroughbred Breeders Guineas (1500m). The three-year-old Hussonet colt is now unbeaten in his last three outings, putting him firmly in contention for the Gr.1 Two Thousand Guineas at Riccarton on 17 November.
Rios, a $65,000 yearling at the Karaka Premier Sale, is the first foal from Last Tycoon mare Gussy Godiva. He is represented at the Karaka Premier Sale next January by a half-brother by Volksraad, being offered by Little Avondale Stud.
Second-placed Alamosa (O'Reilly x Lodore Mystic) - the second highest rated two-year-old in New Zealand last season - will be represented in the Waikato Stud draft at the Karaka Premier Sale by a half-brother by No Excuse Needed.
Another standout at Trentham was the promising two-year-old Vincent Mangano (No Excuse Needed x Rationable). The colt made it two wins from two starts with his impressive win in the Listed $55,000 Gillies Group Wellesley Stakes over 1000m.
An $80,000 purchase at the Karaka Premier Sale by his trainer Peter MacKay, Vincent Mangano is now likely to head to the Listed $55,000 Murdoch Newell Stakes (1100m) at Pukekohe on November 24, then he may then contest the Gr.3 Eclipse Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year's Day on his way to the Karaka Million on 27 January.
The colt's dam, Rationable (by Housebuster), is an unraced daughter of the high class racemare Rationale, and a half-sister to the dam of Amalfi.
Vincent Mangano is represented at the Karaka Premier Sale (28 & 29 January) by a half-brother by Waikato Stud sire O'Reilly.
