Rolling Pin (NZ) Crowned NSW Provincial Horse of the Year

Karaka graduate Rolling Pin (NZ) has been named the New South Wales Provincial Horse of the Year after a stellar racing season that included two wins at stakes level.

The son of Pins came of age as a five-year-old taking out consecutive black-type victories in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap at Newcastle over 1500m before taking out the Group 2 Shannon Stakes at Rosehill.

The night was bittersweet for connections of Rolling Pin as his career was tragically cut short after running a gallant fourth placing in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes.

Trained at Kembla Grange by Gwenda Markwell and owned by Mr M B Sandblom and Mr S A Brodie, Rolling Pin won a total of eight races in his career with earnings of A$487,450.

Rolling Pin is out of the multiple stakes winner Gypsy’s Daughter (Mi Preferido), a Listed winner on both side of the Tasman.

Bred by Mrs J Hines, Rolling Pin was a $60,000 purchase by part owner Mr M B Sandlom from the draft of Lyndhurst Farm at the 2009 Karaka Premier Sale.

New Zealand tasted further success on the night with (It’s A) Dundeel (NZ) crowned New South Wales Three-Year-Old of the Year and taking the supreme honour, named New South Wales Champion Horse of the Year.

The son of former Windsor Park Stud stallion High Chaparral is trained in New Zealand by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman and was based out of Bjorn Baker’s Warwick Farm stables for his Australian assault.

Dundeel enjoyed a vintage three-year-old season claiming four Group 1 victories including the three-year-old Triple Crown in Sydney by winning the Group 1 Randwick Guineas, Group 1 Rosehill Guineas and Group 1 AJC Derby. His first Group 1 came in the autumn of last year as he took out the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick.

The winner of the seven races this season for earnings of A$2,108,660 Dundeel is out of Stareel, a mare by extraordinary broodmare sire Zabeel and a daughter of Champion Three-Year-Old Filly of her year Staring (Fiesta Star).
