Satono Glow (NZ) Makes Stylish Return in Cap d’Antibes Stakes

Karaka 2025 graduate Satono Glow (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) is now a dual Group winner from only a four-race career after beginning her three-year-old season with success in Saturday’s A$200,000 Group Three Cap d’Antibes Stakes (1100m) at Flemington.

A member of Windsor Park Stud’s Book 1 draft, Satono Glow was bought by O’Shea Charlton Racing and James Bester Bloodstock for $260,000. She has now won three of her four starts and earned A$315,200.

The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-trained filly won on debut at Warwick Farm in March, then scored a brilliant three-length victory in the Group Three TBV Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Flemington. In her only other start as a two-year-old, she never saw clear air when fourth in the Group Two Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

Satono Glow resumed on Saturday with Jamie Melham in the saddle, and after tracking the front-running favourite Over Excited (Zoustar) in the running, she showed a superior turn of foot down the straight to pass that rival and score by half a length.

Saturday’s win was a pleasing result for the O’Shea-Charlton stable, who had to change tack after a minor setback.

“She was going to run in the Furious Stakes (Group Two, 1200m) last week, but we just had to hold on to her for a bit longer,” Charlton said. “But her work on Tuesday was really pleasing, and she’s obviously got a good record down the straight. When she drew where she did and found the back of the favourite, it gave her a chance.

“We came into today wondering whether we may go up in trip or stay where we are, and I guess we might have answered that with this performance. She’s really classy and has a great group of owners who support us and allow us to buy fillies for them every year, and they’re being well rewarded.”

Charlton is open to the possibility of running Satono Glow in the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), again at Flemington, on October 31.

“We didn’t give it firm thought pre-race, but she’s clearly effective fresh, so these are all things we can think about over the next couple of days,” he said.

Satono Glow has quickly made a favourable impression on Melham.

“She's talented, this little filly,” she said. “The first time I sat on her, back in March, she gave me a great feel, and obviously she was very unlucky in her last start. So I was very happy to take the reins again today.

“She always had the talent, but as a two-year-old she was still quite fine and immature. Today she feels like a furnished product.

“Obviously she'll benefit from that run, her coat will tidy up and then her fitness will improve first-up, but very happy to be back on her.”

A half-sister to the Group Two-placed Kitty Flash (NZ) (Ace High), Satono Glow is an exciting flagbearer in Australia for Rich Hill Stud stallion Satono Aladdin, who has 12 progeny catalogued for the NZB Ready to Run Sale at Karaka on November 18 and 19.
