Two races after kiwi Prince of Penzance (NZ) (Pentire) raced into the history books with victory in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup, NZB graduate Sea Lord capped a great day for the Karaka Premier Sale.
With three previous attempts at the race, including being runner-up in 2013, Sea Lord’s victory yesterday rounded 10 wins from 50 starts. Trained by Stephen Brown, he has now won four black-type races with his biggest victory coming in the 2013 Group 2 Australia Stakes.
“He’s been running really well but this was just off the radar,” commented Brown. “He’s been running in shorter races. This one panned out well for him.
“He had the blinkers taken off him for a few starts but I put them back on for this race which seemed to the trick.”
Jockey Dom Tourneur jumped Sea Lord from barrier 3, getting a quick start to find a spot on the fence. He burst to the lead ahead of the 200m mark and coasted to the line for an effortless win by one-and-three-quarter-lengths over Gregers (Commands) and The Monstar (California Dane), who finished in second and third places respectively.
“Given he is a bit older now I will give him a short rest but he is perfectly healthy and loving it,” added Brown.
The eight-year-old gelding has now won A$736,960 in prizemoney for owners Mr PW Jones, Illusions Racing and Point Picquet.
Sea Lord was purchased at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2009 Premier Sale for $400,000 by Les Samba from Seaton Park.
Bred by P Newman, the son of Street Cry is out of winning mare Dream Lass (Dream Well), a half-sister to stakes winners Joey Massino (O’Reilly), winner of the Group 2 Avondale Guineas, Vigor (O’Reilly), winner of the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes, and Vincent Mangano (No Excuse Needed), a four-time Listed winner including the Listed $1million Karaka Million.
