Selling Success at Inaugural Carnival Sale
9 March 2007
The inaugural Carnival Yearling Sale was conducted at Karaka today with a successful day's trade marking the end of New Zealand Bloodstock's 2007 National Yearling Sales Series.
From 259 horses catalogued the average price forthe 156 sold was $25,059 which compares well with the National Yearling Sales results where the second session Select Sale average was NZ$49,715 and the third session Festival Sale average was NZ$12,593. The Sale median was $20,000.
The clearance rate climbed steadily from a slow start early in the day to finish at 69%, with total takings for the sessionof NZ$3,909,250.
These results bring overallturnover for the 2007 Yearling Sales Series to NZ$85,284,950from 1498yearlings catalogued and 1177 sold, compared with NZ$65,721,500 for 1528 catalogued and 1043 sold last year.
Marketing Manager Petrea Vela summed up the days proceedings, "As a sales opportunity this was pitched at the Select/Festival quality yearling that might benefit from the extra few weeks in the paddock or might particularly appeal to the buying bench we would attract at this Sale. I think today's results have met that expectation, and in many cases exceeded it, with the average price holding up well compared with the Select and Festival Sales and a number of the top quality lots selling extremely well."
"This Sale was always going to be a good test of how robust our domestic market in fact is andit has held upwell. It can take a while for both buyers and vendors to have confidence in any new initiative but overall we are pleased with today's results and arecertainthat, with good support next year, this can be a solid foundation for us to build on."

Ellis had nothing but praise for his latest acquisition, and the new Karaka sales initiative. "This is a beautiful colt that we have bought to target the Karaka Million at Ellerslie. We probablypaid a bit more than we had intended to spend butit's not unusual to have to pay overs to secure good colts and we are very happy to add him to our stable."
"I am surprised by how strong the sale has been today with good types demandingextremely good prices. I have seen buyers here from all over the country which is a credit to the New Zealand Bloodstock team and also an indicator of the revival our industry is experiencing thanks inlarge part to Winston Peter's tax changes. I think this Sale is definitely one to be repeated -it fits in well with Cup week and helps us greatly in our mission to try and get more racing enthusiasts outbidding and buying atKaraka."
From a predominantly domestic buying bench the leading buyer of the Sale was Dean Hawthorne who bought seven yearlings for an average of $37,643 and an aggregate of NZ$263,500. The second leading buyer was Queensland bloodstock agent John Foote who bought three yearlings for NZ$174,500 including the third top priced lot of the Sale for NZ$90,000.
Thenew Sale was introduced at the request of vendors who wanted a sales opportunity for their yearlings around the new Auckland Racing Club Cup Carnival. Those vendors who had a particularly successful day's selling included Tom & Shelley Murtagh's Esker Lodge, the leading vendor by both aggregate and average (with three or more sold) after selling eight yearlings for an aggregate of $349,000 and an average of NZ$43,625, including the top lot of the day.
All yearlings bought today are eligible to be entered in the Karaka Million, the new one million dollar race for Karaka sale graduates, and the Carnival Sale Bonus Race set for New Zealand Derby Day in 2008.
