Sender (Keeper x Oh Sister) produced a surprise win for owner Jonathan Munz in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m). Breaking maiden ranks just three weeks ago, the gelding has escalated through the grades rapidly with a third placing in the Listed Express Stakes, (1800m) at Flemington on Oaks Day.
Dean Hawthorne purchased Sender at the 2005 Karaka Premier Yearling Sale for NZ$135,000 from Trelawney Stud. His half-sister, by Elusive City, is entered in the new Karaka Carnival Sale, to be held on March 9 during Auckland Cup Week.
Flame of Sydney (Encosta de Lago x Flame of Atlanta), a graduate of the 2005 Highview Stud draft at the Karaka Premier Sale, finished one-and-a-quarter lengths behind in second. Damon Gabbedy's Belmont Bloodstock Agency secured the filly for NZ$230,000.
Standing at Cambridge Stud, Keeper (Danehill x Nuwirah) will be represented by six entries at this week's Karaka Ready to Run Sale.
Bart Cummings' 2003 Karaka Premier Sale purchase, Swick (O'Reilly x Crme Anglaise), clocked in his fourth career win, taking out the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1400m) by three-quarters of a length. Cummings secured the colt from the draft of his breeders, Waikato Stud, with a bid of NZ$100,000.
O'Reilly, the sire of Kerry O'Reilly, Splashing Out and The One, continues to impress this season and has eight entries at this week's Karaka Ready to Run Sale.
Rounding off the day's success for the New Zealand breds was the Roger James trained Hasta La Ciao Ciao (Unbridled Song x Ester Kelly). The six-year-old mare dominated the smart field of mares in the Listed Summoned Stakes (1500m) to win by almost three lengths. Now a dual Listed winner, the 2002 Karaka Premier Yearling Sale graduate was bought by Mr Mark Maronde for NZ$170,000 from the Chequers Stud draft.
