Darley's Shamardal (Giant's Causeway) |
Shamardal's oldest Southern Hemisphere crop are just spring three-year-olds and his finest performer to date, Bart Cummings' Faint Perfume, scored in today's Group 1 Crown Victorian Oaks (2500m).
Other smart performers by Shamardal include Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes winner Shamoline Warrior, unbeaten two-year-old colt Run for Wilson, winner of the Listed AJC Breeders Plate, and Group 2 and Listed placed Marquardt who finished sixth in the 2009 Group 1 Golden Slipper.
Te Runga's well-credentialed colt, Lot 209, breezed well in a time of 10.80 (click here to view) and pedigree wise his family is full
The promotion of his sire, Darley stallion Shamardal, was quite simple in referring to his racetrack career: 'never headed, never beaten.'
That is because the Giant's Causeway stallion was never once headed in a race, never mind beaten. The tough front-runner won six races including the Group 1 French Derby, the Group 1 French 2000 Guineas, the Group 1 St James Palace Stakes, and the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes which resulted in Shamardal being named Europe's Champion 2YO and 3YO of his generation.
His sire potential did not stop there. His dam Helsinki (Machiavellian) is herself a full-sister to Champion US sire Street Cry, who currently leads the 2009/10 Australian Sires Premiership as the sire of Group 1 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking and Group 1 Yalumba Stakes winner Whobegotyou.
Helsinki and Street Cry are both out of Helen Street (Troy), winner of the Group 1 Irish Oaks.
Te Runga's chestnut colt, Lot 209, is out of Group 3 winner Clerio (Soviet Star), a half-sister to Group 2 winner Bahr (Generous) who placed in both the Group 1 English and Irish Oaks.
Further, Lot 209's great grand-dam La Mer (Copenhagen) was New Zealand's Champion 2YO and 3YO filly in the mid 1970's when winning 24 races including the Group 1 NZ Oaks, Group 1 ARC Air New Zealand Stakes, and the Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes.
As Lot 209, Te Runga's Shamardal colt is expected to sell between 4-5pm on Tuesday 17 November at Karaka.
Please note: This colt is incorrectly catalogued as foaled 1 January 2007. He was in fact born on 30 September 2007.
Te Runga's own first season sire, Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby winner Castledale (Peintre Celebre), has had a cracking week leaving three individual trial winners from his first three trial performers.
Fillies out of Missprynt (Epidaurus), Fabienne (Jetball), and Katie (Desert Sun, now named Queen of the Castle)scored at Ashburton, Woodville, and Waverly trialsrespectively last week for the Grade 1 winning racehorse.
