Snitzel Filly Tops Yearling Session

Day 1 of the Karaka May Sale saw two lots in the Yearling session fetch over $100,000 with Curraghmore providing both highlights.

A Snitzel filly (Lot 64) out of stakes-winning mare Tip The Wink (Stravinsky) was in demand with New South Wales-based Champion Thoroughbreds securing the yearling for $120,000.

Jason Abrahams, principal of Champion Thoroughbreds, was pleased to secure the filly.

“She’s a flight filly, but she looks quick and should go early – she wasn’t overly big but Snitzel isn’t big himself.

“She’s out of a young stakes-winning mare which are hard to find, and a $200,000 service fee stallion, so from our point of view it’s a good buy.

“We’ll take her back to Sydney, get her broken in straight away and John O’Shea will train her. We nominated her for the Karaka Million Series so will be hoping to get her back here next January.

“We have bought a few off Curraghmore and Nearco Stud in the past and had a bit of luck, so hopefully we can do that again.”

Curraghmore sold Lot 36 earlier this morning for $110,000 with David Ellis of Te Akau Racing securing the filly.

“We were satisfied with the prices both fillies made – they were pretty obvious fillies in the Sale and both had a good amount of positive inspection,” commented Gordon Cunningham.

“I am really grateful to both Te Akau and Champion Thoroughbreds for buying both fillies. I hope that they can join the list of good horses that both parties have bought from Curraghmore in the past.

“Despite how tough the Sale was, I still like the concept of having a Yearling session at the May Sale. Hopefully the John Messara report will initiate dramatic and much needed changes to improve participation at all levels in our racing and breeding industry.”
