So You Think Signals Cup Intentions
1 November 2010
The wins just keep coming for champion So You Think, his latest in Saturday's Group 1 $1 million VRC LKS MacKinnon Stakes (2000m) was stunning.
It seems every time So You Think (High Chaparral x Triassic) hits the track he trumps his previous performances, showing his seemingly endless potential. That was no different on Saturday, his win surely rates as one of the most emphatic performances in recent MacKinnon Stakes history.
Regular jockey Steven Arnold was elated with So You Think's win andthe pair have now notched up four consecutive Group 1 races.
"He was magic today. I didn't want to restrain him from the stalls and get him cranking early on so I just let him stride for the first furlong and then he got a nice run, we let a couple go and he just cantered in the run. He's an awesome horse.
"He seems to have pulled up great. He's super within himself, jumping around, so I don't think it's hurt him too much.
"I was a little bit concerned and probably still am about the 3200 metres but today was a real positive, he relaxed so well.
"I would prefer dead ground so he can use his turn of foot. Good horses like him, whether the track is hard or soft, the tempo is fast or slow, make their own luck.
"Hopefully he can do the same on Tuesday."
Master trainer Bart Cummings has declared 13 his lucky number after the champ's performance. He is shooting for his 13th Melbourne Cup win and with So You Think producing such a wonderful performance in preparation for tomorrow, he surely has a golden chance of victory.
A $110,000 purchase for DGR Thoroughbreds from Windsor Park Stud at the 2008 Karaka Premier Yearling Sale, So You Think is raced by long time Cummings client and friend Dato Tan Chin Nam in partnership with Tunku Ahmad Yahaya.
From only 11 starts, So You Think has won on eight occasions, five at Group 1 level and has amassed an incredible A$5,174,050.
So You Think's Cup tilt took another big boost on Saturday evening, drawing barrier three for the 150th running of the $6 million Melbourne Cup. He is now a clear $3.50 favourite to win the race.
However, So You Think has a lot to overcome tomorrow. It will be his first attempt at a distance of more than 2040 metres and, with all the rain Melbourne has had over the last two days, the track will be testing to most mounts, with So You Think no exception.
Even so, with the feats this outstanding horse has achieved, a win would come as little surprise. The champ has already re-written the history books with his Cox Plate wins and has captured the imagination of racing fans across Australasia. And for those who dear to dream, tomorrow's Melbourne Cup will provide him with the opportunity, on the world stage, to show that he is indeed, an outright legend of the turf.
Part owner Dato Tan Chin Nam summed up his prized stallion's chances beautifully.
"Always a doubt but a good horse, a champion horse, can overcome."
