Somepin Anypin (NZ) Romps Home in G3 Gold Cup
4 November 2011
The Gary Portelli trained Somepin Anypin has passed what his trainer described as his biggest test so far when he ran out every inch of the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) to take his first stakes victory.
Coming into the race in red hot form, Somepin Anypin (NZ) (Pins x Ungaro) broke the 1400 metre track record at Rosehill at his last start, but there were queries as to whether he could run out the 1600 metre trip.
With jockey Jim Cassidy aboard, who has ridden the four-year-old in all four of his starts this season, the son of Pins led all the way in the Group 3 feature to win by an emphatic four lengths.
Clearly impressed with the performance, Portelli commented after the race that Somepin Anypin could yet be one of the best horses he has trained.
"He can stretch his distances - he sprints and then he can get up to a mile. Those sort of horses you can have a lot of fun with," said Portelli.
Somepin Anypin may yet remain in work this spring with Portelli keeping an open mind towards contesting the Group 2 Villiers Stakes in mid-December. But with the horse confirming that the 1600 metre trip no longer holds any concerns, the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap is now firmly on the radar.
Bred by Waikato Stud, Somepin Anypin was purchased by Vin Cox Bloodstock from Waikato Stud for $30,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock's 2009 Karaka Premier Sale. He has now won over A$300,000 in stakes earnings for his group of eight owners.
Somepin Anypin is the 43rd stakes winner for his sire Pins. Hong Kong's Champion Sire and New Zealand's leading sire for black-type winners last season, Pins boasts a winners-to-runners ratio of over 67%.
The Centaine mare Ungaro is also the dam of the Group 1 performer Salsa (O'Reilly) and the good performer in Hong Kong Evergreen (Danasinga). Ungaro's yearling colt by O'Reilly will be on offer at the Karaka Premier Sale in January.
Pins has nine lots in the upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale including the half-brother to the Group 3 winner Larry's Never Late (Pentire) and stakes winner Collar (O'Reilly) from the stakes winning Zabeel mare Laebeel at Lot 185.
