South Island Sale Catalogues Out Now
6 July 2007
Catalogues for New Zealand Bloodstock's annual South Island Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Mixed Bloodstock are available from today.
A renowned hotbed of opportunity for buyers looking for untried two-year-olds at exceptional value, the South Island Sale has grown steadily in stature and success year upon year, attracting an ever-increasing quality of entries.
Once again scheduled to be conducted at the Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch, this year 193 horses have beencatalogued for the one-day Sale, comprising two-year-olds (149), yearlings (6), unraced horses (5), racehorses (13) and broodmares (20). Amongst this selection are a gelding by Pins out of Group 1 winning Sound Reasonmare Soundoration (Lot 126). The dam of six winners from eight to race,Soundoration was a five-time winner herself including in the Group 1 New Zealand Cup.
The Sale features half-relatives to stakeswinners such as Group 1 winner Bunker (Sandtrap). The colt at Lot 96 from Selwyn River Stud is out of Straight Strike mare Perfect, the dam of three winners from 1100m to 1600m.
Other relatives to stakeswinners include Lot 34, an O'Reilly filly out of Erudite (Sound Reason), a half-sister to multiple stakeswinner Pledge (Mellifont); Lot 110, a colt by Dubai Destination out of five-time winner Rivertaine (Centaine), the dam of smart performer in Hong Kong Coup Stravinsky - Regency Horse (Stravinsky) and hot up-and-comer O'Reilly Rally (O'Reilly); and Lot 143, a filly by Occidental Tourist out of Aim to Please (Famous Star), a half-sister to leading galloper in Macau Six Aces (Felix the Cat).
Last year's leading vendor, Berkley Stud of Christchurch, is once again well-represented with the largest draft in the Sale. In addition, the Stud's ill-fated sire Al Jadeed - a son of Forty Niner's best son, Coronado's Quest, and bred and raced by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum - has the largest selection of two-year-olds of any stallion representedat the Sale. Al Jadeed recorded a Group 2 victory over Van Nistelrooy at two but then injury led to his early retirement. The Stud tragically lost the promising stallion in December 2005 making this his last crop to go up for auction.
BerkleyStud's 19 entriesinclude two-year-olds by Al Jadeed, My Halo, Faltaat, Towkay and Shinko King, plussix broodmares.
South Island vendors White Rode Lodge and Emerald Lodge are also represented by large drafts, whilst Curraghmore Stud, Esker Lodge and Loch-Haven Thoroughbreds are amongst the North Island vendors making the trip south.
