Southern Filly Series Comes Down To The Wire
28 April 2004
Despite finishing unplaced in the last leg Classic Clare (NZ) (Gold Brose x Funny Features) leads the points table by a margin of seven points. This ensures her a win, the only question being whether she will share the title with the unbeaten Uprize (NZ) (Prized x Impossible Dream). Uprize, trained by Peter and Dawn Williams, is currently sitting in second position with seven points. Not only will she require a win for level pegging in the competition she will also need to see Classic Clare finish out of the placings.
The presence of some proven North Island fillies in tomorrow's field will give the connections of Uprize an indication of their filly's potential. The most interesting of the northern brigade is the Paul O'Sullivan-trained Vouvray (NZ) (Zabeel), who looked very promising with a winning double during the summer but finished only midfield when stepped up to stakes company at her last start. A recent trial win and good work since was enough for her connections to send her south on this one-race campaign.
Points will be awarded in Saturday's race with seven points for first, three for second and one for third.
The field for Saturday's New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes (Listed) is:
