Southern Success with Macau Derby Win
10 April 2007
An outstanding performance by Ka Lam Fortune (My Halo x Winkum) on Sunday night saw yet another Derby winner emerge from New Zealand Bloodstock's Sale Ring, this time from the South Island Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Mixed Bloodstock. Digging deep, the tenacious gelding ground down Geronimo Meadow's lead to win the Macau Group 1 Derby (1800m) by half-a-length.
Fellow New Zealand bred Sparky Winner (Towkay x Mission Star) was a further length back in third.
Trained by Stephen Leung, one of 26 licensed trainers in Macau, Ka Lam Fortune has amassed approximately NZ$305,000 in prize-money from three wins and three placings in his ten start career.
Paul and Leanne Richards secured him from the 2004 draft of Selwyn River Stud for NZ$5,500 and subsequently sold him to Macau, where he is raced by Leung Fung Wan Yiu, Ng Kang So, Lui Chi Shan & Lee Yau Wai.
My Halo stands at Alan Jones and Edwina Morris's Berkley Stud in Christchurch for a fee of NZ$4,000 + GST this season. The Group 1 winning Argentinean bred sire commenced stud duties in New Zealand in 2001. From his first two crops to race, he is forging a reputation for producing handy gallopers such as stakes-winner Halobelle and stakes-performers Solis, Le Saint, The Hurricane, Mysitcal and My Hangover.
Other winners on the night included New Zealand-breds The Lucky Twins (Jade Robbery x Star) and Happy Wanderer (Zerpour x Tattenhall).
The Lucky Twins, who previously raced as Pasadena Kid in New Zealand, was purchased by Bryce Tankard at the 2003 Karaka Premier Sale for NZ$110,000 from Trelawney Stud.
