Spotlight on Bumper Weanling Crop at Karaka

Over 400 weanling entries at New Zealand's National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale in May means buyers are in for one of the biggest weanling showcases ever seen at Karaka.

In total, 323 weanlings are catalogued for sale from Sunday 8th May. This includes 216 Select Session weanlings plus 18 weanlings offered as part of Fayette Park Stud's Unreserved Weanling Dispersal.

In addition, the main sale is preceded by the Westbury Stud Unreserved Mixed Bloodstock Sale on Friday 6 May, which includes 82 weanlings.

One of the most anticipated aspects of this Sale is seeing the first crop weanling offerings by the new, young sires. This year's weanling sessions see 13 first crop sires, including:

BLACK TUXEDO (JPN): By Sunday Silence x O.P Cat (Storm Cat)

A son of the Japanese stallion sensation Sunday Silence, Black Tuxedo is a winner of four in Japan including grade JPN-2 over 2200m. He is from a stakes winning Storm Cat mare in O.P Cat, a five-time winner in the USA. She is a half sister to stakes placed, Lord Felix, second in the Gr.3 Longchamp Prix de Saint-Georges. He now stands at Java Lodge.

Black Tuxedo is represented by 4 weanlings, including:

Lot 36: A bay colt out of Omnicorp mare, Our Showtime. He is from the family of stakeswinners in New Zealand & Australia, Broadway Hit and First Edition.

DON EDUARDO (NZ): By Zabeel x Diamond Lover (Sticks and Stones)

By New Zealand's champion sire, Zabeel, this hot new sire still holds the record for the highest priced yearling to be sold at auction in the southern hemisphere when he was bought for NZ$3.6m from Karaka in 2000. He was a five-time winner from 1300m to 2400m, including a Group 1 win in the Australian Derby at three, and twice Group 1 placed at four. His dam, Diamond Lover, is a half sister to ten-time Group 1 winner, Octagonal. Ron & Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm have recently announced that he will be standing there for the forthcoming season.

Don Eduardo is represented by 10 weanlings, including:

Lot 23: From Unfuwain mare, Mwaared, is a half brother to stakeswinner, Wyndam Special (Centaine). His grand dam is the triple Group 1 placed, Nouvelle Star (Luskin Star).

Lot 176: A bay filly out of Grosvenor mare, Grovana, a winner of seven, herself from NZ Filly of the Year, Impasada (Imperial Seal).

Lot 219: A bay filly from Our Rosalee (Conquistarose) and a half sister to two stakeswinners in The Mighty Finn and Fifty Fifty. This filly forms part of the Fayette Park Stud Unreserved Weanling Dispersal.

Lot 230: A half brother to two winners, this colt is out of Group 1 winning mare, Dolcezza (Sir Silver Lad), also placed in the Gr.1 VRC Oaks.

DRAMA CRITIC (USA): By Theatrical x Guiza (Golden Act)

Winner of a Group 3 race in Kentucky and placed at Group 1 level behind Fantastic Light. By champion sire, Theatrical (by Nureyev) who won ten times between 1600m and 2200m and was ranked the USA 1987 top turf male horse. Theatrical won six Group I events headed by the Breeders' Cup Turf Stakes. From a stakes winning mare in Guiza, Drama Critic stands at Totara Park Stud.

Drama Critic is represented by 13 weanlings, including:

Lot 70: A filly from Sovereign Command (Bold Venture), she is a half sister to two winners, and from the family of stakeswinners Golden Heights and Ascending.

GOLAN (IRE): By Spectrum x Highland Gift (Generous)

This new addition to the Windsor Park Stud stallion roster is by Spectrum from Generous mare, Highland Gift. Four time winner from 1400m to 2400m including a Group 1 winner at three and four in Europe, he was second on the International Timeform Rating 4YO+ Classification (long).

Golan is represented by 7 weanlings, including:

Lot 9: A chestnut filly out of McGinty's Girl (McGinty) a half sister to Group 1 winner and four-time Group 1 placed, Lord Majestic, and stakes placed in South Africa, Foreign Fields.

Lot 67: A colt from winner of 13 in Sopherim by Centaine, a half sister to Ronzino (Waikiki Star).

Lot 120: A colt from Danzatore mare, Buzzy Bee, dam of two winners including Turbojet (Jetball), winner of four in Hong Kong.

INDIAN DANEHILL (IRE): By Danehill x Danse Indienne (Green Dancer)

By champion sire of sires, Danehill, from Green Dancer mare Danse Indienne, a three quarter sister to Aryenne, dam of Quest For Fame. Winner of four in France, including the Gr.1 Longchamp Prix Ganay, he had a timeform rating of 124 at four. Placed in four Group 1 events at three and four he now stands at Java Lodge.

Indian Danehill is represented by 3 weanlings, including:

Lot 170: A filly out of Kreisler (Golden Sound), four time winner and stakes placed in Australia. This filly is the half sister to two winners, and from the family of Group 1 winners Golden Heights, Cronus and Pravda.

Lot 189: A filly from stakes placed mare, Jacindra (Bold Ego), and a half sister to three winners.

NO EXCUSE NEEDED (GB): By Machiavellian x Nawaiet (Zilzal)

Joining Waikato Stud's stallion ranks is this multiple group winning son of Machiavellian, himself a champion in Europe at two. No Excuse Needed's wins include the Gr.2 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, and he finished second to Noverre in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes. He was the second top GB-trained horse on the International 3YO Classification (mile) in 2001.

Lot 88: Out of Tranquill (Prince of Praise), this filly is from the family of Calm Harbour (Spectacular Love), winner of the Gr.1 Thorndon Mile and Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes.

Lot 129: A chestnut colt out of stakes winning mare, Cinnamon Girl (Gold Brose).

Lot 212: A filly out of Danasinga mare, Localpoint, from the family of dual Gr. 1 winner in Australia, Electronic.

PYRUS (USA): By Mr Prospector x Most Precious (Nureyev)

By Mr Prospector, the sire line responsible for sprinting sensation Silent Witness, Pyrus was a Group 2 winning 2YO and Group 3 winner at four in the US. He stands at Westbury Stud.

Pyrus is represented by a total of 23 weanlings, including:

Lot 99: From six-time winning mare, Peace of Mind (Wild Rampage), a half sister to Hong Kong Derby winner, Makarpura Star (Native Kingdom). This filly forms part of the Westbury Stud Unreserved Sale on 6th May.

Lot 109: A filly from stakes placed mare, Ruby Turner (Deputy Governor), a full sister to Singapore Horse of the Year, Zirna.

RIVIERA (FR): By Kris x Manureva (Nureyev)

A Group 1 winner over a mile and second highest stakes earning son of Champion GB/Ireland sire, Kris, sire of 75 stakes winners. From the stakes winning Nureyev mare, Manureva, he stands at Fairdale Stud.

Lot 262: A filly out of Super Paradise (Honor Grades) from the family of multiple Group 1 winner, Surfers Paradise.

STRATEGIC IMAGE (AUS): Strategic x Golden Snippets (Snippets)

A Group winning sprinter in Australia, he won 5 races as a 2YO (including the Gr.2 STC Silver Slipper & Gr.2 Pago Pago Stakes) before later adding the Gr.1 MVRC Australia Stakes. Son of successful sire Strategic, Strategic Image is from a winning Snippets mare and stands at Te Runga Stud.

Strategic Image is represented by 7 weanlings, including:

Lot 92: A colt out of Utah (Vision Quest), a half sister to seven time winner, Green Machine, and stakes placed Kansas City Belle. This is from the family of Top of the Pops and Veloso.

Lot 178: A colt from stakes winning mare, Helen's Pride (Lord Ballina).

STREET CRY (IRE): By Machiavellian x Helen Street (Troy)

Impressive winner of the Group 1 Dubai World Cup by four and a quarter lengths, he had five wins from twelve starts in North America and UAE. With a timeform rating of 130, he was the highest rated horse in the world on his retirement in 2002. He stands at Darley Stud in Australia.

Lot 128: A colt by Chloella (Geiger Counter), a six-time winning mare in Australia. This colt is from the family of stakes winners Pins, Nips, Rothko and Gamesman.

USTINOV (AUS): By Seeking the Gold x Let's Elope (Nassipour)

Ustinov is a Gr. 2 winner of the AAMI Vase in Melbourne and twice placed second at Gr.1 level including second in the Caulfield Guineas to champion, Lonhro. At four he was third in the Gr.1 Caulfield Stakes after Lonhro and Sunline. He is by multiple Group 1 winning son of Mr Prospector in Seeking the Gold, from the outstanding racemare and Australian Horse of the Year, Let's Elope, and stands at Brighthill Farm.

Ustinov is represented by 5 weanlings, including:

Lot 7: A colt from Maud Gone (Yeats), herself out of Cologne, winner of the Gr.1 Western Australian Oaks and second in the Gr.1 AJC Oaks.

Lot 89: A grey filly from five-time winner, Tri Lyric (Three Legs), and half sister to stakes winner, My Mo Rally.

VAN NISTELROOY (USA): By Storm Cat x Halory (Halo)

Top performing juvenile, this son of Storm Cat sold for US$6.4m as a yearling. Three-time winner at two, he won the Group 2 Futurity Stakes in faster time than both Hawk Wing and Giant's Causeway. He also ran second in the Gr.1 Curragh National Stakes. He stands at Trelawney Stud.

Van Nistelrooy is represented by a total of 7 weanlings, including:

Lot 140: A bay colt from five time winning mare, Dancing Aurora, a half sister to New Zealand Derby winner, Popsy. This colt is the half brother to two winners, and from the family of Gr.1 Ellerslie Sires Produce winner, Mi Jubilee.

Lot 188: A first foal from Carnegie mare, It's Only A Dream, from the good group performing family in Europe of Lyric Fantasy, Royal Applause and In Command.

Lot 205: A colt from the Sir Tristram mare, Lady Stanhope, half sister to Group 1 performer in Italy, Arctic Envoy, dam of dual Group 1 winner, Caitano.

VIKING RULER (AUS): By Danehill x Tristalove (Sir Tristram)

By Danehill from New Zealand's famous Eight Carat family and standing at Cambridge Stud, Viking Ruler was a Group 1 winner at three in the AJC Spring Champion Stakes over 1800m.

Viking Ruler is represented by 2 weanlings, including:

Lot 136: A filly from Cutaway (Kris) a three quarter sister to Isle of Pines, dam of Tall Timbers and Taken. This is from the family of successful performer in England in Antonius Pius, second in the Gr.1 Breeders Cup Mile.
