Steady Gains on Day 2 of Karaka Select Sale

30 January 2014

The momentum continued on Day 2 of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Select Sale today at Karaka, with figures advancing further on yesterday, and last year’s result.

Savabeel x Run Brony Run Lot 773 $200k-1

Savabeel colt Lot 779 tops Day 2 of Select Sale.

Comparing favourably to Day 1 & 2 last year, the average, clearance and turnover are all tracking ahead of the 2013 figures. With 304 Select Sale horses now sold for $14,175,000, the average is up 4% to $46,628 and the median matches last year’s $37,500. Notably the clearance rate is currently 75%, ahead of last year’s 70% at the same point in the Sale.

Showing good competition at the top end of the market, the first two days of this year’s Sale have produced 32 Lots over $100,000 compared with just 21 in 2013.

The highlight of the day came at Lot 773 with the Savabeel colt from Redoute’s Choice mare Run Brony Run knocked down for $200,000 to NZB as agent for a Hong Kong buyer. Offered by Goodwood Stud, the colt becomes the top price of the Select Sale so far this year.

NZB’s International Sales Manager John Cameron purchased the colt for a client in Hong Kong.

“He’s a very good type, he obviously has a lot of quality and has a very good walk and a good temperament, in fact I think he’s very much like Savabeel,” said Cameron.

“I’ve purchased for his owner in the past and the horse had been successful for him, he had a new permit and asked me to buy one for him. I tried on some in the Premier Sale and was unsuccessful but I’m delighted with this colt, he was well worth waiting for. He’ll stay in New Zealand and get broken in and developed and then head to Hong Kong in May or June next year as an unraced horse.”

The result also contributed to a strong selection from Waikato Stud sire Savabeel, who has had 58 yearlings sold this week so far. With a top price of $500,000 paid at the Premier Sale for Lot 258, the Cox Plate winning son of Zabeel sits in the top spot by aggregate and in fifth position on the sires table by average at this session, with 18 yearlings selling at an average of $61,667 for a total of $1,110,000, the only sire to break $1m at the Sale.

His barn mate at Waikato Stud, O’Reilly, is the leading sire of the Select Sale with six Lots sold for an average of $84,167.

But the freshman sires have also been to the fore at the Select Sale, providing five of the top 10 prices of the Sale so far.

Rip Van Winkle leads the first season sires table with 13 Lots sold for an average of $61,962. He shares the third-highest price of the Sale, and the equal-highest price for a freshman sire. Lot 849, by the World Champion Miler and from the Fastnet Rock mare Teardrop Island, was purchased by Hong Kong agent Willie Leung for Mr S To for $170,000 from Curraghmore Stud.

Sharing the highest price for a first season sire is Little Avondale Stud’s Per Incanto with a colt by the son of Street Cry purchased by Waikato Bloodstock for $170,000. Catalogued at Lot 838, the colt becomes the highest priced Per Incanto to be sold at auction.

Australian-based first season sire Equiano featured just one entry in the Sale, Lot 890, also purchased by Willie Leung, for $160,000 from Cambridge Stud.

Melbourne Cup winning freshman sire Shocking also provided a $160,000 sale, with Lot 837 purchased by NZB as agent from Rich Hill Stud, where Shocking stands, while Showcasing provided at $130,000 sale at Lot 645 yesterday, the colt from Perlin’s family that was purchased by LB Racing from Hallmark Stud.

The leading Select Sale purchaser so far is Bryce and Ginger Tankard’s Waikato Bloodstock who have purchased six yearlings for a total spend of $555,000. The father and son duo’s highest priced purchase was the Per Incanto colt at Lot 838. The pair also secured one yearling at the Premier Sale earlier in the week, purchasing Lot 321 a colt by Savabeel for $190,000 from Prima Park Bloodstock.

The leading vendor by aggregate through two days of the Select Sale is Rich Hill Stud which has sold 23 horses for a total of $1,145,000 at an average of $49,783.

The leading vendor by average (with three or more sold) is Henley Park, selling four horses for an average of $78,750 with their highest price Lot 732, a Hussonet colt purchased by Aquanita Racing for $125,000.

Day 3 of the Select Sale continues tomorrow at Karaka from 11am at Lot 921.
