Stellar Assortment of Sires at NZB National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale

29 April 2016

The progeny of some of Australasia’s most exciting stallions feature in the catalogue for next month’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka, including the recent addition of a filly by Champion sire Savabeel.

The supplementary entry, Lot 541, is the only weanling in the Sale by Savabeel. Offered by Little Avondale Stud, the filly is out of the Elusive Quality mare Kahurangi, a half-sister to Group 1 KrisFlyer Sprint winner Green Birdie (NZ).

Savabeel lifted his tally of individual Group 1 winners to 11 with the recent Easter Stakes victory by Sound Proposition (NZ). Other leading performers this season for the Waikato Stud sensation include three-time Group 1 winner Kawi (NZ) and the dominant A$4m Queen Elizabeth Stakes heroine Lucia Valentina (NZ).

Buyers will have one other opportunity to secure the offspring of Savabeel with the Group 1 placed Volksraad mare Corsage, Lot 439, in foal to the popular sire. The budding broodmare sire also has four of his daughters catalogued as broodmares.

Savabeel has had to share the stallion headlines with the remarkable Cambridge Stud sire Tavistock, whose service fee has soared from $7,000 to $65,000 in less than three years, due to the racetrack feats of his Group 1 winning offspring Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ), Tarzino (NZ), Tavago (NZ) and the Hong Kong superstar Werther (NZ).

Tavistock features prominently in the Sale with 13 weanlings catalogued, plus 10 broodmares who are in foal to the son of Montjeu.

Savabeel and Tavistock are currently ranked first and fifth in the current New Zealand sires’ premiership, with other leading sires Darci Brahma, Iffraaj and Pins also set to have a strong presence at Karaka in May.

There is one weanling in the Sale by I Am Invincible, who has become hot property in his brief career to date with 11 stakes winners including the Group 1 winner Brazen Beau.

Haunui Farm’s Showcasing, sire of $1m Karaka Million winner Hardline (NZ) who was a graduate of the Sale, has 10 weanlings catalogued while Little Avondale’s young sire Per Incanto has the largest draft of weanlings with 18 lots.

The Sale will represent the passing of the torch from the late, great Waikato Stud stallion O’Reilly to his exciting young son. The final weanling progeny of O’Reilly will go through the ring with colts out of Barbara Ann (Lot 115) and Mexican Rose (Lot 263). At the same time, his four-time Group 1-winning son Sacred Falls will make something of a debut as three broodmares in foal to him go through the ring.

Other sires represented include youngsters who have made a big impression with their first crops of two-year-olds. Jimmy Choux, sire of stakes-placed Weanling Sale graduate What Choux Want (NZ), will be represented by 12 weanlings. Dalghar, the sire of record-breaking Listed Champagne Stakes winner Astara (NZ), has five weanlings catalogued and So You Think, the sire of Group 2 winner Gold Rush (NZ), will be represented by one weanling.

Young sires set to debut their progeny on racetracks in the coming season include Hallmark Stud’s Super Easy with a large draft of 14 weanlings in the Sale, popular young Waikato Stud sire Ocean Park, leading freshman sire at the 2016 Select Sale Reliable Man and Cambridge Stud’s Power, whose first runner Peace Envoy was a winner in the Northern Hemisphere. The Oaks Stud’s Niagara has nine lots in the Sale and Mapperley Stud will present 11 weanlings by resident sire He’s Remarkable.

Sires presenting their first Southern Hemisphere weanling crops include Dawn Approach, Unencumbered, Camelot, Jakkalberry, Ferlax, Eurozone, Epaulette, Declaration Of War, Shamexpress, Albrecht and Sweet Orange. Windsor Park Stud’s exciting prospect Shamexpress, a Group 1-winning sprinter, has six weanlings in the catalogue while Haunui Stud’s young sire, the Group 1 Australian Guineas winner, Ferlax, will be represented by eight of his weanling offspring.
