Super Trade on Day 1 of NZB Ready to Run Sale

After a steady start to the day, the 2012 edition of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale of 2YOs gathered momentum to post strong trade on the first day of the two-day Sale at Karaka.
With 53 more entries than last year, 204 of this year’s 407 catalogued lots were featured today, with 111 sold for $8,063,000. This represents a sale average for the day of $72,640, currently fractionally ahead of last year’s record final average of $71,125.
The Sale median is tracking at $52,500, 17% ahead of last year’s record final median of $45,000. The clearance rate after 204 lots is 67%, down from last year’s 72% at the end of the first day.
The highlight came early in the day with Hong Kong trainer Dennis Yip securing Lot 19 for a top price of $300,000. The Casino Prince colt from the Grand Lodge mare Ausbred Chic was the sole Sale entry from Jon & Karin Hogan’s JK Farm, breezing up in a speedy 10:23 seconds.

Yip also purchased the third top price to make him the leading buyer for the day, with the Towkay gelding at Lot 72 bought for $240,000. From the Group 2 winning Dance Floor mare Dancing Daze, he was offered by Sam & Jamie Beatson’s Beatson Stables.
Yip was full of praise for this year’s Ready to Run Sale.
“In the last few years there have been many good horses that have come up to Hong Kong from the Ready to Run Sale and been successful so you know the Sale has quality horses,” he commented.
“This year I thought the quality of the horses was very good and so far I have been lucky to get the two that I wanted. Both of these horses have the qualities that I look for, which are first the conformation and then the action of the gallop, so I am very pleased.”
“There are some that I would like to buy tomorrow as well so I will be back in the morning.”
The second highest price of the day came at Lot 192, with Lyndhurst Farm’s Dubawi colt purchased by Michael Stedman Bloodstock for $250,000.
This was one of 14 entries catalogued today for Mark & Shelley Treweek’s Lyndhurst Farm, and has kept them on target to be the leading vendor for the sixth year in a row, with nine sold for an average of $142,111, including four of the top ten lots of the day. Lyndhurst Farm has a further 11 entries catalogued tomorrow.
With an exceptionally strong international presence at Karaka, the second leading buyer for the day has been Michael Freedman and Michael Wallace buying together for Singapore. Purchasing the top price on Day 1 last year – the dual winner in Singapore this season Super Shadow (Darci Brahma) – the pair have secured four horses for $495,000 so far, including a top price of $175,000 paid for Lot 171, the Darci Brahma colt from Encosta de Lago mare Lacango bought from Oxford Thoroughbreds.
New Zealand-based sire Darci Brahma (Danehill) ends Day 1 as the leading sire by average (for three or more sold), with five sold for an average of $159,000 and a top price of $220,000 for Lot 174 paid by Hong Kong trainer Ricky Yiu.
Next is Waikato Stud’s champion sire O’Reilly with six sold for an average of $112,917 and also a top price of $220,000 for Lot 95 paid by Hong Kong-based Voon Wai Lai.
NZB Co-Managing Director Petrea Vela is very pleased with the Sale’s progress so far.
“The buying bench at Karaka today is probably the best we have ever seen at this Sale which was a great start. There were some quiet patches earlier in the day and buyers are being discerning as you would expect, but this afternoon it was very strong. To have our figures for the day in line with last year’s record Sale is a great result in the current climate and a credit to the vendors. I hope that the good momentum we saw today can continue into tomorrow.”
Day 2 of the two-day Sale will continue from 11am tomorrow (Wednesday) at Karaka, with Lots 205 to 407. The Sale will also be streamed live online at www.nzb.co.nz.
