Saturday’s A$300,000 Listed Jones & Co IGA Brisbane Mile (1600m) marked a winning black-type debut for well-performed Karaka graduate Tenzing (NZ) (Contributer).

The Eagle Farm feature was the seventh win overall in a 29-race career for Tenzing, who has placed on another 12 occasions and has earned A$443,211. He was offered by Leanach Lodge in Book 2 of Karaka 2020, where he failed to meet his $20,000 reserve.

Subsequently sold for $4,400 on Gavelhouse.com, Tenzing began his career with two wins and two placings from six starts for Wanganui trainer Kevin Myers before being sold across the Tasman to prominent syndicators Australian Bloodstock. He has won another five races and more than A$420,000 since then.

The Brisbane Mile was a first appearance at Listed level for Tenzing, who had recorded a win and three placings in his previous four runs leading into the race. He snuck in on the 53-kilogram minimum weight and was given a perfect run by jockey Regan Bayliss from the inside gate.

Tenzing settled in sixth spot and never went around a horse, sneaking up along the fence in the straight. He surged to the lead with 100 metres to run and kicked clear, holding out the fast-finishing Miss Joelene (Russian Revolution) by half a length.

“He’s the sort of horse that can always be competitive in a good race like this if he gets a low draw that allows him to have a soft run, which he got for this race,” trainer Tony Gollan said.

Tenzing became the 12th individual stakes winner for former Mapperley Stud stallion Contributer. The dam of Tenzing is Mizen Peak (Fastnet Rock), who is a half-sister to the Group Three winner Francaletta (High Chaparral) and the Royal Ascot Group One placegetter Asset (Marju).
