The Pooka Highlights Carnival Sale Relatives

5 March 2007

With The Pooka set to line up in the Group 1 Ford Diamond Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday, the colt by Faltaat at Lot 22 is sure to attract interest when he goes up for sale at the Karaka Carnival Sale just one day earlier, himself a half-brother to the dam of The Pooka.

Two-year-old, The Pooka (Tobougg - Awave), has an impressive three wins, a second and a third from five career starts including a Group 3 victory in the Ford 2YO Classic at his last start on 17 February. Earlier last month he also ran second to Crossyourheart in the $500,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Classique at Te Rapa.

Jockey Mark Du Plessis has elected to stay with The Pooka notwithstanding his previous success on Satinka in the Group 2 Matamata Breeders Stakes. "The filly is very smart, but I have a lot of faith in The Pooka," said du Plessis.  Opie Bosson claims the ride on Satinka.

Friday's Carnival Sale will feature a number of other relatives to recent performers incuding the following:

While Magic Cape (Magic Albert - Cape City) couldn't pull off Derby success this weekend the three-year-old's impressive four wins and a third from seven starts has still cast a timely spotlight on his close relative from Lydhurst Farm. Lot 39 is a colt out of Cape Hill, the dam of Cape City.

Jazella's (Black Minnaloushe - Jazzmatazz) front-running win in Saturday's Group 3 Darley Plate provided a boost to Lot 30, the chestnut filly by Rusty Spur out of a half-sister to Jazzmatazz. The three-year-old Select Sale graduate beat the older horses, including Group 1 winner Gee I Jane, to record her third win from five starts.

In Hong Kong Elegant Win (Danehill - Court) is rapidly ascending the ranks under the guidance of Paul O'Sullivan with one win, a second and a third from his four Hong Kong starts. Raced by the Elegant Fashion Syndicate the four-year-old from Cambridge Stud is a half-brother to Lot 61 by Stravinsky.

John Sargent is eyeing up The BMW at Rosehill with his smart mare, Sharvasti (Montjeu - Vedodara), who is set to line up in Saturday's Group 1 Starcraft Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie. Sharvasti added another Group 1 placing to her credit with a second behind Sir Slick in the Whakanui Stud International Stakes since the catalogue went to print. Lot 111 is a colt by Jungle Pocket from Straight Strike mare, Isodara, a half-sister to Vedodara.

Three-year-old filly, Deloraine (More Than Ready - Mysterious Sound), has added black type to her half-sister's pedigree at Lot 163 since the catalogue went to print with a Listed win in the TRC Hobart Guineas and a second placing in the Group 2 MVRC Moonee Valley Fillies Oaks Classic. At Lot 163 from Esker Lodge is a filly by King's Best .

Another promising three-year-old The Chunkster (Blevic - Racer's Belle) has added two wins in Australia from her three career starts. Trained by David Jolly, she is a half-sister to the Royal Academy filly at Lot 192.

In addition, recent winners in New Zealand including Busch's Bay, Call the Chief, Earaheedy, Jet Home, Line Dancer, Marie Curie, Royal Kazak and Sky Rocket are all represented by full or half-relatives in the Sale along with half-relatives to recent winners in Australia Hieronymus, Gertrude McFuzz, Metro Miss and Sky King.
