Third Individual Group 1 Win for NZB Graduates

A weekend of success for NZB graduates was highlighted by Perlin's second Group 1 victory at Caulfield on Saturday.

NZB Graduate's Australian Group 1 Glory

Group 1 winning New Zealand Bloodstock graduates Perlin (Carnegie x Midnight Madam), Portland Singa (Danasinga x State Of Oregon) and Lachlan River (Desert King x Viveasha) had outstanding success across the Tasman over the weekend.

Ready to Run Sale success, Perlin, had a bold win for trainer, Graeme Rogerson, in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Bred by Mrs TM & WH Hurlstone, Perlin was a successful pinhook from the Karaka sale ring as yearling for $85,000, and then sold at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale for $200,000. Perlin's win was the third individual Group 1 win for New Zealand Bloodstock graduates this season.

The Lee Freedman-trained, Our Smoking Joe (Encosta de Lago x Dazling) finished in second place, with last season's New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series winner, She's Justa Tad (Istidaad x Infinity) rounded off the placings. Trainer, Rudy Leifting, confirmed that NZ$1,000 sales graduate, She's Justa Tad, will now target the Group 1 Cox Plate.

Now in his build up to the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, the Group 1 Queensland Derby winner, Lachlan River again displayed his huge talent with a win in the AAMI Handicap (1815m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Lachlan River was bought for NZ$40,000 by John Morrissey at the 2003 Premier Sale at Karaka.

The Bart Cummings trained Pendragon by Elnadim, out of the 1996 Filly of the Year Series winner, Alacrity, won his first race after four previous placings in Sydney. Bred by David Paykel, Pendragon passed the post ahead of Power Of Destiny (Danehill x Jeanetta Cochrane) and Duelled (Redoute's Choice x Leica Pretender) in the Woolworths Gloaming Stakes Treble (1800m).

Jeanetta Cochrane is now owned by Pencarrow Stud and has produced two other black type horses who are full siblings to Power Of Destiny in Saxon and Dane Shakira. Pendragon was an $180,000 purchase at the 2004 Karaka Premier Sale by Duncan Ramage from Fairdale Stud's draft.

Howmuchyacharging Wins First Fillies Race

Howmuchyacharging (Howbaddouwantit x Fairdale Lass) prevailed to win by half a neck in the first race of the Filly of the Year Series, the Group 3 Highview Stakes (1200m) at Hastings on Saturday.

The Group 1 placed, Howmuchyacharging, won over the O'Sullivan trained Crepe de Chine (Pins x Gio) in second and City Affair (City On A Hill x Royal Pay) in third.

Howmuchyacharging, bred by Fairdale Stud, is the fifth New Zealand winner for the Stud's resident sire, Howbaddouwantit. The filly was sold by Fairdale at the 2004 Karaka Select Sale for $26,000. Crepe de Chine went through Waikato Stud's draft in the Premier Session, selling for $90,000 to Paul O'Sullivan.

Howmuchyacharging takes the early lead in the Filly of the Year Series with 6 points on the board, while Crepe de Chine has 3 points and City Affair has 1 � points. The next race in the series is the Listed Soliloquy Stakes (1400m) at Ellerslie on the 8th October.

Singapore Winners

New Zealand bred gelding, World Airlines (Umitalla x Euchre) added to his six carreer wins by taking out the big race of the weekend in Singapore. He won the Singapore Group 3 Jumbo Jet Trophy (1400m) ahead of Hulk (Greenlander x Power Nap) and Lim's Classic (Dehere x Augustine) for his trainer Steven Burridge and owners, the Top Champ Stable.

It was a case of third time lucky for Big Occasion (Mellifont x Repremand) who won won his first race for trainer Laurie Laxon on Sunday. Placed in his first two starts, he won the Maiden 1600m race ahead of the Bruce Marsh trained Saturday Gold (Gold Brose x Satonda). Big Occasion, a half brother to Champion NZ Stayer, Honor Babe (Honor Grades x Repremand), was sold by Poplar Lodge at the 2003 Festival Yearling Sale for $15,000.

 A New Zealand Bloodstock graduate trifecta took out the Open Benchmark 53 (1600m) at Race 2. The winner was another Duncan Ramage purchase. This time it was from the 2001 Karaka Premier Sale draft of Chequers Stud for $100,000. Lyman Hall (Deputy Governor x Georgia) came in ahead of Sky Missile (Al Akbar x On The Murray) and Lim's Dynamite (Danasinga x Shekanwyn).

Sky Missile was purchased by Magic Racing Bloodstock at the 2003 Ready to Run Sale for $30,000 from Esker Lodge's draft. Lim's Dynamite was a $150,000 purchase at the 2001 Ready to Run Sale by Mick Dittman.

Also on Saturday, Planet Star (Mellifont x Three Times) won the Open Benchmark 53 Race 1 over 1600m. Planet Star was brought by the Global Syndicate for $20,000 as a two year old at the 2003 National Weanling and Broodmare Sale.

In the Open Benchmark 40 Race (1600m) on Sunday, Karaka Premier Sale graduate, Establish (Zabeel x Desert Lily) produced a convincing win over Argentinean bred, Barfold Hero (Lode x La Trenzadora). Establish was purchased by Rogerson Bloodstock for $310,000 at the 2002 Premier Yearling Sale.
