Unique Opportunity from Pencarrow Stud May Draft
27 April 2010
New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale will see Pencarrow Stud offer buyers a unique opportunity at Karaka next week.
Laying claim to some of the most exciting racetrack stars of the past decade including the outstanding racemare Ethereal and five-time Group 1 winner and now sire Darci Brahma, Pencarrow will offer for sale their first mares from this family for many years.
Retaining and racing most of their fillies, with 34 winners to date this season, Pencarrow will offer 34 predominantly young mares in a strategic decision to slow the expansion of its broodmare band.
Stud Manager Leon Casey commented on the decision, "The fact is the Stud retains and races so many fillies that we now have to try and put a ceiling on the numbers we have on our books.
"The line-up includes some very attractive breeding prospects. It includes some young mares fresh off the track, plus for the first time in many years we'll offer mares from Darci Brahma and Riverina Charm's families, families we've been working on for over 20 years."
Emirates Doncaster Day at Randwick just a fortnight ago provided an exciting example of the success that could be had with two of the day's stakes winners being subsequently bred from Pencarrow Stud sold mares. Kudakulari (Savabeel x Oenotria by O'Reilly) proved the speediest juvenile, taking out the Listed AJC Fernhill Stakes for Bart Cummings. Meanwhile later in the day Herculian Prince (Yamanin Vital x Sea Island by Woodman) won the Listed JRA Association Plate, booking himself in for a big cups campaign in the spring for the Waterhouse stable.
Further commenting on the offering Casey said "Some of the best sires in the world such as Danehill, Zabeel, Rock of Gibraltar, Sadler's Wells and Cape Cross are represented in our draft with some of the mares in foal to some of the most commercial sires at stud today including Darci Brahma, Fast 'n' Famous, No Excuse Needed, Savabeel, Keeper and Towkay."
Highlight lots include:
Lot 610 Star Charm (Cape Cross x Sarwatch by Jetball): Out of the champion NZB Filly of the Year Sarwatch, Star Charm is also a direct descendent from one of the Stud's foundation mares, Riverina Charm.
Lot 702 Cheerful (Starway x La Fleur Petrus x Sir Tristram): A seven-win mare, Cheerful's list of achievements includes the Group 3 Cuddle Stakes. Her last foal sold at Karaka 2010 for $250,000 and she has left the promising filly Ensoleille (Van Nistlerooy). Last served by Fast'n'Famous.
Lot 747 Encens (Common Grounds x Idyllic by Foolish Pleasure): Encens is a half-sister to the champion sire Scenic. Only two foals have been through the sale ring, a Danehill filly fetching $1.3 million and a Redoute's Choice colt which brought $450,000. She has had three foals to the races, all winners, and was last served by Darci Brahma.
Lot 773 Hameeda (Hector Protector x Habibti by Habitat): Bred in the purple she is out of the Group 1 winning champion mare Habibti and is also a close relation to the wonderful Eight Carat. Last served by Darci Brahma.
Lot 801 Kwan (Sadlers Wells x Commanche Belle by Shirley Heights): This blue-blood mare boasts two of the best broodmare sires in history and is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Fairy Heights. She has had three foals to the races including the promising Martial Art who was purchased by David Ellis for $250,000. Last served by Keeper.
Horses are set to start arriving at Karaka for the Sale, starting at 10am on each day from 3 - 5 May, this Friday 30 April.
