26 January 2015
Leading New Zealand three-year-old Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ) (Tavistock) continued his dominant form with another stellar victory in the $100,000 Res. Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Karaka 3YO Mile (1600m) at Ellerslie’s Karaka Million meeting yesterday.

Making it five consecutive wins, Volkstok’n’barrell has won every race since his debut third in August. He was the winner of the Group 2 The Sound Great Northern Guineas at his last start and has now won three stakes races for trainers Donna and Dean Logan.
“He just keeps rising to the occasion,” commented co-trainer Donna Logan. “He is still very immature but he has got so much ability and when he let down tonight he had a real turn of foot.
“I can’t recommend enough for people to go to Karaka and buy horses as we’ve done with the last two winners tonight.”
The Logans were in the winner’s circle the race prior with Candle in the Wind (NZ) (Darci Brahma) victorious in the $100,000 Windsor Park Stud Karaka Stayers Cup.
The son of up and coming sire Tavistock took the lead on the rail with Matthew Cameron on board at the start of the mile long race. Woodsman (NZ) (Mastercraftsman) applied pressure half-way through the race which did not deter Cameron as he took a sit behind contently behind Woodsman in second position.
It was a battle between Volkstock’n’barrell, Rockfast (Fastnet Rock) and Woodsman as they headed for home but the Tavistock gelding proved too good for his rivals. He sprinted away for a one-and-three-quarter length victory over Rockfast who held on for second and Stratocaster (NZ) (Mastercraftsman) powering in for third place.
An early favourite for the Group 1 New Zealand Derby, Volkstok’n’barrell has now earned $176,250 in prizemoney for owners G Cossey, Mrs A Gibbs, C Gibbs, J Gibbs MNZM, A Goodwin, IDL Racing Ltd, Donna Logan & Rosemount Stud Pty Ltd.
Donna Logan Racing Stables purchased Volkstok’n’barrell for $50,000 at the 2013 Karaka Select Sale from Seaton Park.
Volkstok’n’barrell’s sire Tavistock has produced three 3YO stakes winners this season and has four horses catalogued in the Karaka Premier Sale which commences today.
Bred by IDL Breeding Ltd, Volkstok’n’barrell is out of winning Volksraad mare Volkster, a sister to stakes placegetter Champion Chestnut (Volksraad) and Dame Mapperley (Volksraad). Dame Mapperley is the dam of Group 2 Great Northern Guineas winner Le Baron (Golan).
Yearlings purchased at this year’s NZB National Yearling Sales Series will be eligible to race in the improved $250,000 Karaka 3YO Mile in 2017.
Nominations for the 2015 Karaka Million Series close on Tuesday 3 March at 5pm with the NZ$1,750 +GST entry fee per horse.
