Weekend Results From Hong Kong

New Zealand horses again acquitted themselves well in Hong Kong over the weekend, with a win and numerous placings at the Sha Tin meeting.

Gorgeous Years (Defensive Play x Lady Bay) was a very impressive winner of the second race on the card, the HK$500,000 San Po Kong Handicap (1000m, class 5). The four year old gelding drew away in the home straight to defeat Smiley Win (Clay Hero x Cinquefoilette) by an easy two and a half lengths with Red Lancer (Dare and Go x Ready Cat) a head back in third place.

Gorgeous Years was purchased at the 2000 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Colts Sale for $32,500 by the Australian based Aquanita Racing Ltd from the draft of Rich Hill Thoroughbreds.

The talented Nasa Pearl (Centaine x Nasajuanita), winner of last season's $150,000 Colts and Geldings Mercedes Super Bonus Prelude, produced his best effort from four races in Hong Kong to date, running a close second in the Victoria Racing Club Trophy (1800m, class 2), one of the two $HK1,000,000 races on the card.

The Centaine gelding was purchased by Stuart Hale for $52,000 at the 2001 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Colts Sale. Nasa Pearl went through in the draft of Waikato Stud.

The two three year olds Aurelian (O'Reilly x Give it a Whirl) and Mighty Hugo (Zabeel x She Might Hula) also finished second in their class 4 HK$570,000 races, the Kowloon City Handicap (1400m) and the Ma Tau Wai Handicap (1600m) respectively.

Aurelian was purchased at the 2001 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Colts Sale by Murray Baker for $42,500 from the draft of Esker Lodge, while Mighty Hugo was purchased at the Premier Sale by Rogerson Bloodstock for $180,000 from the draft of Cambridge Stud.

A string of Kiwi horses were also third in their races on Saturday night, including Corajoso (Woodman x Malberry), Multi-Win (Frenchpark x Taupaki Girl), Knight Templar (I Conquer x Espion) and Waialae Win (Honor Grades x Sonchela).

Corojoso, third in the HK$700,000 Diamond Hill Handicap (1400m, class 3), was purchased by New Zealand Bloodstock on behalf of clients for $200,000 at the 2000 Premier Sale from the draft of Norelands Stud.

Multi-Win, who was having just his first start in Hong Kong for a close third in the HK$570,000 Sau Mau Ping Handicap (1200m, class 4), was purchased by Gary Jenkins for just $5,000 at the 2001 New Zealand Bloodstock Festival Sale. The Frenchpark gelding was sold by Gavin Boland.

Knight Templar followed his first start third with another third in the HK$570,000 Ma Tau Wai Handicap (1600m, class 4). Knight Templar was purchased at the 2001 New Zealand Bloodstock Festival Sale by Paul Willets for $10,000 from the draft of Wynyard Lodge Stud.

Waialae Win continued his consistent form of late with a third in the HK$570,000 Ngau Tau Kok Handicap (2000m, class 4). The Honor Grades four year old was sold by the Ra-Ora Haunui Partnership at the 2000 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale. Waialae Win was purchased by John Moore for $150,000.
