Entries Due for Karaka 2016

Entries for New Zealand Bloodstock’s 90th National Yearling Sales Series close today, Monday 6 July. The 2016 National Yearling Sales Series will be held at Karaka from Monday 25 January to Monday 1 February.

New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale Series has proven results, providing 40 individual Group 1 winners in the past three seasons – the best record of any Australasian Sales company.

A world-class buying bench descends upon Karaka every year to purchase the quality thoroughbred yearlings on offer. Karaka 2015 provided strong results with the average price at all three Sales increasing again, following on from increases in 2014.

As extra incentive, the Karaka Million Series has had a huge boost with a new $1m race added. Yearlings offered at Karaka 2016 will now be eligible to enter to compete for the $1 million Karaka Million event for two-year-olds (1200m) in 2017, the new $1 million Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) in 2018, plus the $100,000 Windsor Park Stud Karaka Stayers Cup (2200m) each year thereafter.

Karaka Premier Sale: 25 & 26 January

The Karaka Premier Sale is renowned as a world-class source of thoroughbreds, providing the highest quality pedigrees and conformation. The racetrack success of graduates of the Sale inspires both the domestic and international buying bench to return to Karaka.

Last year’s edition saw successful bidding action from leading buyers such as Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis, Paul Moroney, Tom Moore, Duncan Ramage, Chris Waller, Dean Hawthorne, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Bruce Perry Bloodstock, Peter Moody and Graeme & Debbie Rogerson, all of whom spent over $1 million each at the Premier Sale alone, together totalling in excess of $17 million.

The sought-after Sale has claimed six of the eight Australian Group 1 victories that were won by New Zealand Bloodstock graduates in the 2014-15 season, including the Doncaster Handicap, the Victoria Derby, the Australian Oaks, the Turnbull Stakes, the Flight Stakes and the George Main Stakes.

The Entry Fee for the NZB Premier Sale is NZ$1,800 + GST per yearling.

Karaka Select Sale: 27 – 29 January

The Karaka Select Sale is growing in popularity and, with the quality it attracts, there is something for all buyers. Last year’s three-day Sale concluded with the international spend accountable for over half of the total aggregate of the Select Sale, with buyers from nine countries active.

A new record was set at this year’s three-day Sale with a colt by freshman sire Tartan Bearer bought for $525,000 by South Australian trainer Phillip Stokes, who secured the colt for Hong Kong businessman Thomas Li, smashing the previous record of $300,000 set in 2008.

Group 1 winning Select Sale graduates Dal Cielo (NZ) (Per Incanto), Platinum Witness (California Dane), Shuka (NZ) (Bachelor Duke) and Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ) (Tavistock) flew the Karaka flag this season alongside Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor) who stamped himself as a Group 1 Derby winner in both New Zealand and Australia.

The Entry Fee for the NZB Select Sale is $1,100 + GST per yearling.

Karaka Festival Sale: 31 January & 1 February

The Karaka Festival Sale is the final session of Sales week, there is plenty of quality to be found with the likes of this season’s Group 1 winners Iamishwara (NZ) (Keeninsky) and Gaultier (NZ) (Rios) graduates of the Sale.

The Sale-topper of the 2015 edition, an Iffraaj colt, was secured by Hong Kong’s Tartan Meadow Bloodstock for $85,000. Buyers from Hong Kong were the second leading country by spend, behind New Zealand, with Hong Kong the first of seven international countries with buyers active at the Sale.

The Entry Fee for the NZB Festival Sale is $600 + GST per yearling.
