20 October 2008
Weekend racing saw some timely updates for New Zealand Bloodstock's Ready to Run Sale, with the Breeze Ups being run today and tomorrow at Te Rapa Racecourse in Hamilton.
Bella Valentina (Pins x Roaring Meg by Centaine) provided a boost to her full-sister's pedigree with a decisive win in the Listed SAJC Durbridge Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.
Entered at Lot 193, the filly was purchased at this year's Karaka Select Sale for NZ$80,000 and will be offered by Challenge Thoroughbreds in the Ready to Run Sale. She is set to breeze up tomorrow.
Their dam is the Centaine mare Roaring Meg who is a daughter of the Group 1 WRC Lion Brown Sprint winning mare Mrs Selleck. Bella Valentina and fellow Pins filly Raid, who won the Listed Rotorua RC Lion Red Plate on Saturday, took the Waikato Stud sire's total stakes-winners to 23 with their wins.
Both fillies were sold by Waikato Stud - Bella Valentina being a NZ$125,000 purchase by Paul Moroney Bloodstock at the 2006 Karaka Select Sale while Herbie Dyke bid to NZ$250,000 to secure Raid at the 2007 Karaka Premier Sale.
Meanwhile in Singapore last night, 2006 Ready to Run Sale graduate Protg (Montjeu x Elusive Quarry by Zabeel) blitzed the field with a last-to-first victory in the STC Panasonic Toughbook Stakes (2000m), winning by one-and-a-half lengths.
From the family of the outstanding Hong Kong gallopers Helene Vitality (Zabeel) and Everbright (Cape Cross), his trainer, CharlesLeck, purchased him at the 2006 Ready to Run Sale for NZ$72,500 from Eion Kemp's Kilgravin Lodge draft. This year Kilgravin have their biggest ever draft on offer and are the largest vendor at the Sale with 23 lots.
The win by Protg was the Monovale Farm-bred gelding's seventh win and his fourth in a row. He will be represented by a yearling half-sister by Choisir at the 2009 National Yearling Sales Series.

Bright, sunny, Waikato weather set the scene for the first day of the Breeze Ups with the track rated a Slow 8. The fastest time of the day came with Lot 62, the Red Ransom colt from Lady Circles streaking down the final 200 metres of the Te Rapa straight to record a time of 10.66 seconds. Lady Circles is a half-sister to starry gallopers Elvstroem and Haradasun.
