First Ever Breeze Up Session For 2yos At May Sale

11 February 2003

New Zealand Bloodstock today announced that the 2YO category of the National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale in May will include a Breeze Up section for the first time.

The session will be named the Autumn 2YO Sale and will include sections for 2YOs which complete an official Breeze Up, while still offering sections for those which do not breeze up or remain unbroken.

The main catalyst for the creation of a Breeze Up section has been the recent decision by New Zealand Bloodstock to cancel it's Singapore Ready to Run Sale. The Singapore Sale, which has been held annually in May for the last 3 years, has been cancelled for 2003 due to the stagnant economic conditions and depressed demand for young stock in Singapore at present.

It really hit home to us during the recent yearling sales just how little buying activity is being generated from Singapore at present. We already have 19 2YOs that were purchased specially for the Singapore Sale but we have decided that it is just not viable to fly them up and run the sale in Singapore. The costs of running the sale up there are significant and we believe would be near impossible for us to recoup in the current climate in Singapore, explained Bloodstock & Marketing General Manager, Julia Naismith.

The line up of 2YOs which were destined for Singapore includes geldings by Daggers Drawn, Danske, Deputy Governor, Faltaat, Kashani, Kilimanjaro, Lord Ballina, Mellifont, Oregon, O'Reilly, Pompeii Court, Soviet Star, Torrential, Vialli, Volksraad and Woodborough. Among the offering is a full brother to recent Grp 3 Sandown Stakes placegetter Lord Erin, from a sister to top racemare Acushla Marie. There is a full brother (Mellifont x Hatchet Girl) to promising young recent winner Scissorman. The Danske gelding is from a sister to the dam of recent G1 Hong Kong International Sprint winner, All Thrills Too. There is a brother by Volksraad to NZ Oaks placegetter Lady Annaliese and a close relative to Singapore's former Champion Racehorse, Ouzo.

We usually breeze our Singapore horses up and film them here in NZ before they travel, so we will do so again this year but offer them here in the Autumn 2YO Sale Session of the May Sale instead.
In addition to the 19 Singapore Sale geldings we will welcome entries from any vendor who wishes to participate in the 2YO Breeze Up section. The Breeze Up 2YOs may be tried or untried.

The Breeze Ups are currently scheduled for Friday April 4 at Cambridge Jockey Club's Training Centre.

The Breeze Ups will be filmed and presented in video and internet format, similar to the major Ready to Run Sale in November but on a slightly smaller scale.

We believe it will significantly enhance the appeal of these late 2YOs if buyers can see how they move under saddle prior to auction, concluded Naismith.

The Autumn 2YO Sale and the Autumn Yearling Sale will both be held in conjunction with New Zealand's major breeding and mixed sale, the National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale, scheduled for May 11, 12 & 13. The final format and selling schedule for each session will be determined once entries have been received and numbers for each section are known.

Entries for the National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale, including the Autumn 2YO Sale and Autumn Yearling Sale will close on Wednesday March 5.
