Half-brother to Salamanca (NZ) at NZB Weanling Sale
6 May 2013
A timely stakes victory by Salamanca (NZ) in Saturday’s $50,000 Listed Berkley Stud Champagne Stakes (1250m) has provided significant updates for a number of horses in NZB’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale that starts on Wednesday.
The Sale kicks off with the weanling session this Wednesday at 10am and will include a half-brother to Salamanca (Alamosa x Anca) by the in-form sire Darci Brahma. The colt, at Lot 6, will be offered by Gordon Cunningham's Curraghmore Stud who has been the top vendor at the weanling session for the last seven years.
“He’s a quality colt and I think he was one of the nicest foals we had on the farm last year,” said Curraghmore Stud’s Stud Manager Gordon Cunningham.
“He’s a strong colt and his half-sister by Alamosa was also a quality filly and she made $70,000 at this year’s Karaka Select Sale from our draft.
“Salamanca’s victory was also a good result for her part-breeder Graeme Hunt who was also involved in breeding Efficient who won the VRC Derby/Melbourne Cup Double.”
The two-year-old Salamanca is from Alamosa’s first crop and is his first stakes winner. The sire-son of O’Reilly has celebrated five individual two-year-old winners this season and saw his smart daughter Quintette finish second in the Listed Welcome Stakes earlier in the season.

Curraghmore Stud will offer a draft of 22 weanlings by such sires as Any Suggestion, Darci Brahma, Encosta de Lago, Iffraaj, Makfi, Savabeel, Shocking, Showcasing, Thorn Park and more.
“We are very happy with our draft this year,” said Cunningham. “The horses look great and there are a number of good pinhooking and racing prospects on offer.”
