With a host of profitable pinhooking results, and some stellar Group 1 victories on tracks around the world over the past 12 months, the Weanling Session of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale is boasting a big run of success that should lure buyers to the 2013 edition at Karaka next week.
The first session of NZB’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale, held at Karaka next week from Wednesday 8 to Friday 10 May, the Weanling Session also represents exceptional value with last year seeing 248 weanlings sell for an average of under NZ$12,000.
A total of 355 youngsters will be auctioned in next week’s Weanling Session which will start at 10am next Wednesday. The information below outlines some of the session’s success stories over the last 12 months and provides a preview as to what’s on offer.
2012-13 Honours Board
Little Bridge (Faltaat): 2012 Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes.
Offered: Wentwood Grange in 2007, Purchased: Margaret Harkema for $9,000.
Solzhenitsyn (St. Petersburg): 2012 Gr.1 Toorak Handicap.

Pinhooking Highlights
The Weanling Sale offers a hotbed of opportunity for those looking to identify weanlings to prepare for the Karaka Yearling Sales in January/February 2013. Two of the pinhooking highlights that were sourced from the 2012 weanling session and sold at the 2013 Karaka Yearling Sales include:
- A colt by Thewayyouare (Lot 81) was purchased by Todd Hartley at the 2012 Sale from Curraghmore Stud for $61,000. He was later offered at this year’s 2013 Karaka Select Sale (Lot 533) where he was purchased by Willie Leung’s Magus Equine for $200,000.

The 2013 Stallion Line-Up
This year’s catalogue comprises 355 weanlings by 76 sires from throughout Australasia. Almost 30 of these sires have produced stakes winners this season and a similar number are yet to have their first progeny hit the track. Sires include:

Sires with their first weanlings in the Sale always attract a high level of interest as their progeny is assessed by buyers for the first time. A total of nine freshman sires will have weanlings from their first southern hemisphere crop on offer in the Sale:

Paco Boy (Desert Style) - 9: Gr.1 winner at 3, 4 & 5 in England and France.

Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) - 1: Triple Gr.1 winner, 2009 Champion 3YO Miler & 2010 Older Miler of Ireland, GB & Europe.
Shamoline Warrior (Shamardal) - 10: Gr.3 winning 3YO and a half-brother to Rebel Raider.
Shocking (Street Cry) - 17: Winner of the Gr.1 Australian Cup/Gr.1 Melbourne Cup double.

Swift Alliance (Don Eduardo) - 1: Triple Gr.3 winner and placed in the Gr.1 Galaxy Handicap.

Some Weanling Highlights
- Lot 30, the O’Reilly filly from the stakes winning Redoute’s Choice mare Cabazon.
- Lot 152, the colt by Makfi from Keep the Passion (Keeper), winner of the Group 2 Royal Stakes at three.
- Lot 189, the Thorn Park half-brother to Group 3 winner Golden Parachute from the Group 2 winning Volksraad mare Maxamore.
- Lot 232, the filly by Rios from the Group 1 winning mare On Air (Mi Preferido).
- Lot 287, an Iffraaj filly from the Group 2 winning mare Sarajay (Danasinga) whose first foal to race broke maiden ranks since the catalogue went to print.
- Lot 282, a Pins half-brother to Sgp-3 Singapore Guineas winner Ace Armada.
- Lot 299, the colt by Darci Brahma from the stakes winning mare Shi Kin Fly (Shinko King).
