Headturning Beauty Shows his Best in Sydney

The success of kiwi-bred horses at the Sydney Autumn Carnival continued on Saturday with another two Group 1 victories under their belt, plus a Listed win by Karaka graduate Beauty’s Beast (NZ) (Guillotine) in the $150,000 McGrath Estate Agents South Pacific Classic (1400m) on the final day of The Championships at Randwick.

The NZ$28,000 Karaka Festival Sale yearling was given his chance to show his best form in Australia following three wins and a second from his last four starts in New Zealand for trainer David Greene.

The three-year-old was racing against his own age group and was ridden by one of Sydney’s leading riders in Hugh Bowman. Bouncing out of the barriers and straight to the lead, Bowman was able to get cheap sectionals mid-race and slipped clear of the field entering the straight. Beauty’s Beast extended his margin and drew away to win convincingly by two lengths from Woodbine (Hussonet) in a time of 1.23.29.

“We couldn’t be happier, he looked to have a little bit in reserve if need be,” commented Greene.

“It is always difficult to cross match New Zealand and Australia form without horses that have been there but I think the three-year-old races he was winning at his last couple of starts back home have always been good future form races. He managed to win both of them lugging decent weights and quite comfortably. That, combined with the ability he has shown the whole way through, we were more than happy to have a go. The only query we had in the week leading up was how wet the track was going to be.

“He will more than likely be running in the Hawkesbury Guineas on Saturday week and then I imagine he will head back home for a spell after that. The way he is progressing I imagine next season he will be right up in the top grade, he has probably shown that already.

The win was a great result for Windsor Park Stud’s young stallion Guillotine, the Group 2 winning son on Montjeu, with Beauty’s Beast from his first crop of foals to race.

“Beauty’s Beast is such a physically imposing horse and was really turning heads on Saturday,” said Greene.

“Everyone was asking who he was by so it was a really big boost for Guillotine. He is doing most of the talking on the track, his oldest crop has hit three now and he seems to get a winner nearly every meeting in New Zealand.”

Saturday’s win was the first success at stakes level for Beauty’s Beast and his fifth win from nine starts. He has earned A$128,043 in prizemoney for his owner/breeder Windsor Park Stud Ltd.

Beauty’s Beast is out of Black Beauty (Black Minnaloushe), a half-sister to Listed winner Grace Park (Danske) who is the dam of this season’s Listed Matamata Slipper winner and Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce runner-up Prince Mambo (Thewayyouare).

Beauty’s Beast’s win came in the second race on a highly successful day of racing for New Zealand-bred and trained horses with Rising Romance (NZ) (Ekraar) triumphant in the Group 1 $1m Australian Oaks and It’s a Dundeel (NZ) (High Chaparral) conquering the rich $4m Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
