Increased Clearance & Median Highlight Solid Select Weanling Session
8 May 2005
Despite a wet and cold May day in Auckland, it has been a solid result for the Select Weanling Session at this year's National Broodmare, Weanling & Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka.
After a quiet morning, the Sale gathered momentum over the course of the day to record some very strong results by the close of selling. A top price of $150,000 was recorded for Lot 172, a Montjeu colt from Go Norn (Clay Hero) purchased by Worldwide Bloodstock for Hong Kong. This is one of the highest priced weanlings ever sold at Karaka, and it contributed to a sale average of $10,758, down from $16,328 at last year's Select Session.
The Sale aggregate for 170 lots sold was $1,828,850, down from $2,514,550 for 154 lots sold last year. But the highlights of the day were the all-important median which was a very pleasing $6,000, up 20% from $5,000, and the clearance rate which was an impressive 85%, up from 77% at this session last year.
The buying bench featured predominantly local buyers, but in addition to New Zealand and Hong Kong, there were also Australian and Korean buyers active throughout the day.
Some of the exciting first season sires sold particularly well, with a Don Eduardo colt from Mwaared (unfuwain) offered by Bloomsbury at Lot 23 fetching the second top price of the day of $58,000. Don Eduardo himself still holds the record for the highest priced yearling to ever be sold at auction in the Southern Hemisphere, when he sold at Karaka for $3.6m.
Immediately following the end of the Select Session, 18 weanlings were offered as part of the Fayette Park Stud Unreserved Weanling Dispersal. The Sale continued the bouyant selling streak of first season sire, Don Eduardo, and showed some pleasing results for the Benjamin family. Their top price was $47,500 for Lot 225 - a filly by Don Eduardo from stakes winning mare, Tough Call (Val Dansant), bought by NZB as agent.
New Zealand Bloodstock Marketing & PR Manager, Petrea Vela, commented, "Today's sale has certainly exceeded our expectations and we are pleased with what was achieved. Overall, the quality of this year's catalogue wasn't nearly as strong as we saw last year, hence the lower sale average and aggregate seen today. That said, there was certainly a solid market for good horses and, as the excellent clearance rate shows, vendors were realistic in their expectations.
We were very happy for David and Masey Benjamin for their successful Weanling Dispersal Sale. There are still plenty of pinhooking and investment opportunities over the next two days, and we hope to continue to see some buoyant selling."
The General Weanling Session will start at 10am tomorrow and will be followed by yearlings, two year olds, untried horses, racehorses, and the first offering of broodmares tomorrow afternoon.
