KARAKA 2005: Day 1 Festival Sale Summary

6 February 2005

The outstanding success of the Premier and Select sessions at Karaka has continued into the Festival Sale today, with the first day's results showing further increases in aggregate, average and median from the buoyant results seen here last year.

The Festival Sale average has risen an impressive 19% from $10,484 to $12,455, and the median held steady all day at $10,000, a 25% increase from $8,000 last year. The aggregate is currently up more than $180,000 on last year, after the same number of lots offered.

While the buying bench featured predominantly local buyers, there were still some active international buyers, particularly from Australia, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

The top lot of the first day was set by Lot 1151, a colt by Skalato from the Zedative mare, Rouge Chaperon. This was purchased by bloodstock agent, Stuart Hale, for $36,000 from the draft of Poplar Lodge. Hale also took the honours for leading individual buyer by aggregate at the end of day one with two purchases for $66,000. Trevor McKee was next on the buyers tables with three yearlings bought for $65,000, followed by The Robt Dawe Agency with three purchases for $53,000.

The leading vendor by aggregate is currently Ross & Jo Mackie's Java Lodge with 12 yearlings sold for $144,500.

The Festival Sale concludes tomorrow with a further 222 yearlings catalogued for sale from 11am. This will draw to a close what has been a record 2005 National Yearling Sales Series at Karaka, where turnover is already some $66,226,600 with a full day still to come, compared with a total Series aggregate last year of $60,631,650.
