Wahid "Number One"

6 February 2005

Wahid (Almutawakel x Rory's Helen) became the country's richest two year yesterday when he stormed to victory in the New Zealand Bloodstock $500,000 Two-Year-Old Classique (1200m).

The Select Sale graduate cruised past race leaders to score by a length over the Graeme Rogerson trained, Dower (Pins x Burwood Road), and Mark Walker's Kindacross (Cape Cross x Kindness).

Wahid is owned by Central Districts farmers, Noel & Ron Stanley, and trained by Allan Sharrock. The chestnut gelding was purchased by Sharrock at last year's National Yearling Sales Series at Karaka for $50,000 from Trelawney Stud.

The listed win will be added to his black type which also includes a Group 2 win in the Ford Wakefield Challenge Stakes at Trentham. It is planned that the two-year-old will contest the Group 1 $120,000 Ford Sires' Produce Stakes at Ellerslie on March 5.

All horses sold at this year's National Yearling Sales Series will be eligible to nominate for the New Zealand Bloodstock $500,000 Classique in 2006.

There are still two days of selling to go at Karaka, with the Festival Sale offering over 400 horses this Sunday and Monday.
