KARAKA 2006: Select Sale Summary

3 February 2006

Increased Average, Median, Aggregate and Clearance

It has been a successful two days of selling at the conclusion of New Zealand Bloodstock's Select Sale at Karaka, with all key indicators reflecting a boost to this year's Sale.

The final Select Sale aggregate was $12,834,250 for 370 lots sold from 557 catalogued, an 11% increase on the $11,539,000 aggregate last year for 512 offered and 342 sold. The median held fast all day, finishing up at the same level as last year, at $30,000. The sale average was $34,687, a 3% increase on last year's final sale average of $33,740, with the clearance rate at 75%, up from 73% last year.

Marketing & Public Relations Manager, Petrea Vela, commented, "We are very happy with the results achieved at the Select Sale over the past two days. Last year we saw a clear flow-on effect from our record-breaking Premier Sale which translated into increases in our Select Sale statistics right across the board. To have been able to grow on those results again this year is extremely pleasing and a credit to the vendors.

"It was great to see a number of overseas buyers stay on at Karaka after the end of the Premier Sale, with buyers from Australia, Hong Kong, Macau, Phillipines, Singapore and Japan all very active ringside."

Australian buyers Kieran Moore, John Foote, John Morrisey, James Bester, Mark Pilkington, Danny O'Brien and Aquanita Racing were amongst those prominent on the buyers list at this session.

The highlight of the day came from the Esker Lodge draft at Lot 1040, a colt by Pentire, out of Our Lucy (Walking Ring), purchased for $130,000 by Paul Duncan of Hamilton.

Cambridge Stud sire, Stravinsky, sire of Australasian Group 1 winners, Serenade Rose and Keeninsky, remained the leading sire of the session with an average of $54,643 for 7 sold. His top lot came on Day 1, with the purchase by Kevin Hickman of Lot 603 out of Stilts (Flying Spur) for $130,000.

Rich Hill Stud sire, Pentire, sire of New Zealand Derby winner, Xcellent, was second on the sires tables with 16 sold for an average of $54,500. His top price of the Sale was the equal highest priced horse at Lot 1040.

The leading first season sire was Van Nistelrooy. Himself a three-time winner at two, Van Nistelrooy has been represented by 22 yearlings which sold for an average of $45,318, with a top price of $120,000.

The leading buyer of the Select Sale was Paul Moroney, with 14 purchased for an aggregate of $622,500. Moroney commented at the close of the Sale, "This year's Select Sale was one of the strongest ever, with strong competition and an overall high standard of yearlings offered. There was a lot of money carried through from the Premier Sale, especially for good fillies. I'm really happy with my selections and have got some exciting types by a variety of sires".

Second leading buyer was prominent Australian bloodstock agent, Kieran Moore, who bought 6 yearlings for a total of $475,000. Amongst these were two yearlings by Cape Cross and four yearlings by Van Nistelrooy, including his top priced lot at Lot 792, a colt out of Debora (Sir Tristram).

The National Yearling Sales Series continues at Karaka on Sunday 5th February with the first day of the two-day Festival Sale. Selling commences at 11am.
