KARAKA 2008: Select Sale Seals Record Week of Selling
1 February 2008
The third and final day of New Zealand Bloodstock's 2008 Select Sale concluded a strong week of selling at Karaka, with new record figures boasting continued strength to the thoroughbred market.
With today's trade steadier than the action-packed days earlier in the week, still the Select Sale has posted a new record average, median and aggregate.
Total takings for the three-day Select Sale are NZ$28,839,500 for 483 young horses sold from the 659 on offer, up 33% on the final turnover last year of NZ$21,626,000 for 435 lots sold.
With the two-day Festival Sale still to go, combined turnover for the week is currently NZ$105,955,000 up a huge $30% on last year's total receipts of NZ$81,375,700 with 403 still to be offered.
The final average price of NZ$59,709 reflects a 20% increase on last year's record average of NZ$49,715, which had increased a whopping 44% on the previous year. In a similar fashion this year's median finished up at NZ$48,000, up 14% from last year's record of NZ$42,000. The final clearance rate was 79%, down from last year's 81.6%

With a top price of $200,000 today for the Van Nistelrooy colt from Thunder Gulch mare Shades of Silk bought by Dr Omie Rangabashyan for Singapore, yesterday's highlight of NZ$300,000 for the Scaredee Cat colt from My Kinda Girl retains the record for the highest price horse ever sold at this session.
Notably, the top end of the market has shown huge growth on previous years, with the number of horses sold for more than NZ$100,000 leaping from just eight in 2006, and 41 in 2007, to 72 this year, with 14 of those sold NZ$200,000 or more compared with just one last year.
New Zealand Bloodstock Marketing Manager Petrea Vela commented, "There was a clear flow-on effect from the staggering results of the Premier Sale into this Session and we're delighted to have posted another set of record figures. Last year's Select Sale was one of the biggest successes of the entire Sales week in 2007, with that session demonstrating the particular strength that our industry has at that level of the market."
"It was the largest catalogue we have ever had at this session so to keep up the momentum and exceed the record figures of last year is an extremely pleasing outcome of the week."
With new buyers competing with a number who have stayed on since the Premier Sale, the overall leading individual buyer of this session was Paul Moroney Bloodstock with 15 horses bought for NZ$1,272,000, with a top price of NZ$200,000 for the Pentire filly from unraced Zabeel mare Close Embrace from Rich Hill Stud. This brings Moroney's tally for the week so far to NZ$2,447,000 for 21 yearlings.
The second leading buyer at this Session was John Chalmers Bloodstock with a large group of buyers with him from West Australia that have so far accounted for 9 yearlings at this session on top of 11 bought at the Premier Sale.
Other prominent buyers on the results sheets included Magus Equine, Ricky Yiu and Deborah Ho from Hong Kong, Kieran Moore, Blue Horizon Syndicate and Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm from Australia, and local buyers John White Bloodstock, David Ellis, Robbie Hewetson, Trevor McKee, Rogerson Bloodstock and Wallace Thoroughbreds.
Leading the sires at this session was freshman sire Lion Heart, Coolmore Stud's dual Group 1 winning son of Tale of the Cat. His three Select Sale entries all sold for an average of NZ$183,333, with a top price of NZ$230,000.
The other standout sire of the Select Sale was Waikato Stud sire O'Reilly, with 17 entries sold for an average of NZ$134,471, including a top price of NZ$280,000 for the colt from a half-sister to the dam of Satinka, Poppies Last (Masterclass).
The leading Select Sale vendor by average was Valachi Downs, responsible for the NZ$300,000 sale topper yesterday afternoon.
The two-day Festival Sale will take place at Karaka on Sunday 3 and Monday 4 February, from 11am each day. The Sale will also streamed live online.
