Karaka Graduate Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ) Claims Fourth Group 1 Win
11 February 2017
The $50,000 that Donna Logan paid to buy Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ) (Tavistock) at the 2013 Select Sale at Karaka has been dwarfed by his racetrack accomplishments, including a fourth Group 1 title in Saturday’s $400,000 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa.
Volkstok’n’barrell has now had 26 starts for nine wins, six placings and more than $1.4 million in stakes. His previous Group 1 victories came in the Rosehill Guineas, Haunui Farm WFA Classic and New Zealand Stakes, while he has also placed in the New Zealand Derby, Australian Derby and Zabeel Classic.
The five-year-old had been unlucky in his three appearances this current campaign, but he turned things around in style at Te Rapa surging to the lead in the home straight under Vinnie Colgan and fighting hard to beat the fast-finishing Savile Row (NZ) (Makfi) by a long head.
“He’s back,” co-trainer Donna Logan said. “I’m so thrilled to see him do that. He’s just such a neat horse, and this race was our plan all the way through. He’s had a lot of knockers recently, but we just bided our time and got him ready for today. He’s done it.”
Volkstok’n’barrell is raced by Garry Cossey, Ann Gibbs, Chris Gibbs, Jim Gibbs, Ashley Goodwin, Donna Logan and Rosemont Stud.
