Karaka Select Sale Continues to Surge

The Karaka 2016 Select Sale continues to track well above last year’s figures with the aggregate surpassing last year’s final total after just two days of the three-day Sale.

With 317 horses sold on the first two days of the Sale, 51 more than at the same point last year, the aggregate is currently sitting at $19,245,200, well above last year’s figure of $13,309,500 on Day Two which represents a whopping increase of 45%. The final aggregate at last year’s Sale was $18,304,000 which has been exceeded with one day of selling still remaining.
The median is also showing great improvement from last year’s figure, rising to $50,000 from $36,750 at the end of Day Two, a massive increase of 36%. The median remains higher than last year’s final Sale average of $46,813.
Big increases have been the theme of the Sale with the average also posting another considerable increase, currently sitting at $60,710 which is 21% ahead of last year’s figure of $50,036 after Day Two.
The 443 horses that were catalogued on the first two days of the Sale have sold at a very healthy clearance rate of 79%, above last year’s Day Two rate of 74%.
There have been nine horses sell for $200,000 or more through the first two days of the Sale, compared with just five across the full three days of last year’s Sale.
A new top price for this year’s Sale was reached with Team Rogerson purchasing Lot 827 for $300,000, a colt by O’Reilly out of Darcey Bussell (Rhythm) from Valachi Downs.
Graeme Rogerson had inspected the colt prior to the Sale and is hopeful the colt can compare with a former stable star.
“He’s a natural and a magnificent individual,” commented Rogerson. “I’ve seen him a number of times and I think this farm breed a wonderful horse. I’m trying to find the next Savabeel and hopefully he’ll be it.
“I rate him as good a horse that I have seen at this Select Sale and I’ve got some wonderful clients that I’ll probably split him between.”
Team Rogerson is currently the second leading individual buyer at the Sale having purchased 10 horses for a total of $837,500.
The second highest priced horse of the day went the way of Japan’s Big Red Farm, purchasing Lot 837 for $210,000. The colt by young New Zealand sire Jimmy Choux, the current leading first season sire in New Zealand, is out of Diva von Tessa (Testa Rossa) and was offered by Lime Country Thoroughbreds.
Also reaching the $200,000 mark was Lot 770, purchased by Paul Moroney. Offered by Little Avondale Stud, the colt is by Nadeem out of Centaine Gu Li (Centaine).
Moroney is currently the leading individual buyer with nine horses purchased for a total of $920,000. Domestic buyers compromise the top three buyers with Wexford Stables third on the list with five horses purchased for $515,000, behind Moroney and Rogerson.
The top 10 buyers at the Sale currently are internationals with Australians Liam Birchley (LB Racing), John Foote, Henry Dwyer, Darren Weir, Eric Pipersberg (Next Level Bloodstock), Troy Corstens (Malua Stayers Fund) and Hong Kong’s Little Kwok Hing Hung, buying in partnership with local trainer Nigel Tiley, featuring in the table. Young Cambridge bloodstock agent Glen Harvey rounds out the top 10 buyers.
Local buyers have bought the most horses with 188 purchased for receipts totalling $9,365,000. Australia have spent the second most with 72 horses purchased for $6,086,200 which is already over 50% more than the $4m they spent across the three days of last year’s Sale.
International buyers remained strong today with Australian buyers Gerald Ryan/Damion Flower (Jadeskye Racing), Jamie Walter (Proven Thoroughbreds), Brad Spicer (Spicer Thoroughbreds), Chris Hyland/Rohan J Hughes and Liam Birchley (LB Racing) joining Japan’s Big Red Farm in purchasing horses in the top 10 lots of the day.
“It has been another fantastic day at the Select Sale with figures still comparing very favourably to last year,” commented NZB’s Bloodstock Sales Manager Danny Rolston. “To surpass last year’s aggregate after just two days is an extraordinary result. We are on track to have the best Sale since 2010 with plenty of positivity around for tomorrow.
“Domestic buyers have always come to the fore at the Select Sale, and have done so again this week, but we are still seeing huge international interest, in particular from Australia, with Japan even staying on at Karaka to buy a nice horse today.”
Along with Australia and Japan, other offshore buyers have come from Hong Kong, Singapore, United Kingdom, USA, Macau, Fiji and South Africa.
After grossing over $11m at the Premier Sale, Savabeel is the leading sire by average with three or more horses sold so far at the Select Sale. The Waikato Stud sire has had five yearlings sell at an average of $133,000.
The leading vendor by aggregate after two days is Westbury Stud with 22 horses sold for a total of $1,652,500, while the leading vendor by average with three or more sold is Valachi Downs, the sellers of the day’s top lot, with seven horses selling at an average of $131,071.
