Kiwis Win 7 of 10 at Sha Tin

25 March 2013

New Zealand horses won seven of the 10 races at Sha Tin in Hong Kong last night with a number of promising young horses making their way through the grades, including the unbeaten Sea Dragon (NZ).

The John Size trained Sea Dragon (Thorn Park x Shadowfax Babe) looks a promising horse in the making and has been brought along slowly by the stable with last night’s win his fourth from four starts.

Last night’s Class 3 1200 metre race saw the four-year-old travel just off the pace under jockey Douglas Whyte, making light work of his rivals as he extended in the straight to a comfortable 1.5 length win.

The victory has seen his rating jump 10 points to 80 since his last start and he has gone up 28 points since his debut in January for his owners the Funs of Family Racing Syndicate.

Size and Whyte also combined to win the second race on the card, a Class 4 1200 metre race, with Hypersonic (NZ) (Darci Brahma) who had to fight hard to win his debut by a head in an exciting performance, indicating there will be more to come from the flashy three-year-old.

Fellow three-year-old Multivictory (NZ) (Bachelor Duke) also won his debut for trainer Tony Cruz in the first race on the card, a Class 4 1000 metre sprint, which he won in a quick 56.99 seconds.

Gurus Dream (NZ) (Ishiguru) looks another up-and-comer for trainer Dennis Yip putting together back-to-back wins in last night’s HK$2 million Class 1 Tolo Harbour Handicap (1400m). The race was his first at Class 1 level and he produced a good performance to win by half-a-length.

The six-year-old son of Ishiguru is raced by Calvin Chan Wah Sun and he has been raced sparingly with last night just his tenth start from which he has won four times for stakes of over NZ$500,000. Yip celebrated a winning double at the meeting with Why Not (NZ) (General Nediym) putting together a hat-track of wins with a Class 3 victory over a mile.

Elusive City four-year-old Really the Best (NZ) was another to complete a hat-trick of wins last night, each being hard fought with his last two starts being won by a nose for trainer Derek Cruz, while Ambassadorship (NZ) (O’Reilly) made it consecutive victories at Class 4 level for Ricky Yiu.
