Fulton Still Flying in Singapore

25 March 2013

Singapore’s 2012 Champion Polytrack Horse Flying Fulton (Flying Spur x Fulton) continued his love affair with the polytrack surface when taking his sixth stakes victory in last night’s S$150,000 Sgp-3 Marsiling Classic Stakes (1800m) at Kranji.

Trained by ex-pat kiwi trainer Mark Walker, Flying Fulton has proven a highly consistent galloper winning stakes races at two in New Zealand, and as a five-, six- and now as a seven-year-old in Singapore.

Last night’s victory saw the son of Flying Spur jump straight to the lead and dictate terms in front under jockey Jose Verenzuela, as he comfortably held off the field in the straight to win by three-quarters-of-a-length in a smart time of 1 minute 51.48 seconds.

Walker is now looking at aiming the Ready to Run Sale graduate at the Group 1 Singapore Airlines International Cup (2000m) on 19 May. The seven-year-old has contested six Sgp-1 races during his career, placing in the Singapore TC Patron's Bowl and running fourth in the Singapore Derby, but the Singapore Cup would be his first attempt at International Group 1 level.

“I think we’ll head to the Singapore Cup,” said Walker. “They pay good prizemoney all the way down to sixth and we’ve already got people from New Zealand interested in coming up.

“I know we’re aiming quite high but we can always come back a bit in grade after that.

“We’ll run him in the Sgp-3 Moonbeam Vase (1800m) on 7 April before the Sgp-2 QEII Cup (2000m) on 26 April as he’s a bit of a gross horse and can get away from us but he’s racing well and deserves his chance at the better horses.”

Bred by Tony & Joe Bongiorno, Flying Fulton was offered by Trelawney Stud as a yearling at the 2008 Karaka Premier Sale. He was then offered by Mana Park at NZB’s 2008 Ready to Run Sale where he was purchased by David Ellis for $210,000.

Raced by the Te Akau Racing Stable, Flying Fulton has now won 13 of his 54 career starts for over NZ$1.3 million in stakes.

Flying Fulton has continued a big season for NZB’s Ready to Run Sale having also seen Sale graduate Sangster (Savabeel) win the Group 1 NZ Stakes/Group 1 Auckland Cup double and Nashville (Darci Brahma) take the Group 1 Haunui Farm WFA Classic.

New Zealand bred horses and Karaka graduates won five races on the 12 race Singapore card last night with Mulan (Savabeel), Yourstokeep (Keeper) and Super Junior (Darci Brahma) also successful.

Only lightly raced, Super Junior made a big impression when winning his first two starts in Singapore for trainer Michael Freedman and last night saw him return to winning form, taking his third victory from six starts.
