Trained by Singapore-based Kiwi trainer Laurie Laxon, the filly landed in Singapore with a big reputation having won two of three starts in New Zealand for Bruce Wallace, and finishing sixth to The Heckler in New Zealand Bloodstock's $1,000,000 Karaka Million.
Mexican Rose's (Volksraad x Down View, by Gone West) professionalism and tough fighting qualities, which saw her beat the likes of future Group 1 winner Kaaptan and Group 1 placed Seven Schillings at her second start, were evident for all to see at Kranji.
Taking up the running for Saimee Jumaat as short priced favourite, Mexican Rose lengthened her stride nicely in front before Always Certain began, what ended up being a strong challenge all the way to the line, around the final bend.
Mexican Rose showed all the tenacity that New Zealand race-goers had become accustomed to, beating off all challenges to score by half-a-length from Always Certain (Not a Single Doubt), with the remainder of the thirteen horse field, headed by Another Sunday (Hurricane Sky), six lengths further back and counting.
Her time in the S$65,000 Open 2YO (1200m) of 1.10.40 was the second fastest time of six races held over the 1200m Kranji turf track, with all other races staged for older competitors.
Mexican Rose will now head for the S$200,000 Juvenile Championship on July 24 for her owners Jupiter Stable. Run by Tang Weng Fei, Jupiter Stable has had plenty of recent success with New Zealand purchases including a victory in the Second-led of the Singapore 3YO Challenge with Given Vision just last weekend.
Mexican Rose was purchased for the stable by Laxon at the 2008 Karaka Select Sale for $85,000 from the draft of Chesterfields. From an international family, Mexican Rose is the third winner for her young Gone West dam Down View. This is the family of Group 1 Arlington Million winner Mill Native (Exclusive Native) and Group 1 French 2000 Guineas placed French Stress (Sham).
Down View is due to foal to Group 1 winning juvenile One Cool Cat (Storm Cat) for the Rivermonte Stud and Watership Downs Stud breeding partnership this season.
