South Island Sale of Burgeoning Stars
8 July 2009
Discerning buyers will note that graduates of New Zealand Bloodstock's South Island Sale are amongst New Zealand's most promising gallopers at present, with smart performances paying homage to this over the last week.
Danica Guy started the wave of success when she presented 2008 graduate Capone (Al Akbar - Good Hearted, by Kinjite) to score at his race debut at Matamata last Wednesday. His four length winning margin over a competent field of late-season 2YO's impressed many including experienced agents.
"There have been offers but so far I have said no," said Matamata trainer Danica Guy, who owns the galloper in partnership with her mother, Gayle.
Winning jockey Jason Waddell completed the full circle of praise for the young galloper. "He has a good future. He was never going to be beaten today".
Capone was purchased by Upstage Bloodstock at last year's South Island Sale for $18,000 as an unbroken two-year-old from Canterbury-based Long Acres Stud. His dam, Good Hearted, is a half-sister to Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes winner Zephyr Zip (Zephyr Bay).
Long Acres Stud will present two unbroken two-year-olds at the 2009 South Island Sale, along with two yearling fillies by their stakes-winning first season sire Remind (Deputy Minister) at Lots 191 and 193. Their two-year-olds include:
Lot 96 - Brown Filly - Senor Pete x Ashley Star (Balmerino) - Long Acres Stud
By Fire Song, Cabella and Rapida's sire Senor Pete, this filly is a half to four winners being from winning mare Ashley Star, a half-sister to Group 1 Railway Handicap winner Fritz (Kreisler).
Lot 116 - Chestnut Gelding - Ekraar x Change of Habit (Four Seasons) - Long Acres Stud
By promising young sire Ekraar, this gelding is the second foal of a winning half-sister to Group 3 CJC Canterbury Gold Cup winner Branson (Personal Flag). His second dam is also a half-sister to two-time BMW Horse of the Year Rough Habit (Roughcast).
The South Island success stretched over the Tasman on Saturday with Bevan and Richard Laming's Benelli (I Conquer x Nassibelle, by Nassipour).
The Mike Manion owned galloper who performed with distinction in the South Island, finishing second in the Group 2 Coupland's Bakeries Mile behind Final Reality, filled the same placing in Melbourne's richest event over the weekend, the Listed $200,000 VRC Championship (1600m).
Having raced four times in Australia in 2009, Benelli took his earnings to A$100,000 this season after a victory and two placings, always finishing strongly against Victoria's top winter company.
Manion paid just $12,000 for Benelli from the 2004 South Island Sale draft of Selwyn River Stud, a small outlay in comparison to his near $300,000 of race track success.
Berkley Stud will offer a half-brother to Benelli at Lot 20 in 2009, by first season sire Coat's Choice (Redoute's Choice).

Glyn Morris' Selwyn River Stud will offer a draft of six at the 2009 South Island Sale including a strong colt by Lord of Warriors built in the same mould as Benelli:
Lot 160 - Bay Colt - Lord of Warriors x Ima Barbie Girl (Waikiki Star) - Selwyn River Stud
This colt is a full brother to Double Dragon who has placed in Hong Kong this season. His dam is stakes placed Ima Barbie Girl, a full-sister to well-regarded South Island stakes-winning filly Argentina.
South Island graduates rewarded their own by providing the South Island with exciting Star Son (Seasoned Star x Alight, by Personal Escort) who notched up his third straight win at Ashburton on Sunday.
The Paul Richards trained galloper made it four wins from seven starts, with an average winning distance of two lengths, culminating in the Ashburton RC Winter Cup trial over 1400m.
Just three-years-of-age, Star Son has beaten his older rivals convincingly in his past two starts, boding well for his next assignment, the Group 3 $100,000 Winter Cup (1600m) on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National Carnival on 1 August.
Star Son was purchased for $5,000 at the 2007 South Island Sale by Mr. BJ Kirk from the draft of White Robe Lodge.
Brian and Lorraine Anderton's White Robe Lodge have bred and sold many top performers with Star Son joined by stakes-winning speed filly Cherry Creek (Monashee Mountain), and stakes placed, Group 1 NZ Bloodstock 1000 Guineas fifth Inferno (Yamanin Vital) as graduates of the Stud over the past few years.
