NZB Ready to Run Sale Setting a Record Pace

19 November 2015

The New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale of Two-Year-Olds has started at a record pace with key statistics all well ahead of last year’s record breaking Sale and large gains have been made when compared to the first day of last year’s edition.

The average has increased a whopping 22% to $91,036 from last year’s figure of $74,638. Today’s average is the highest ever recorded at a two-year-old sale in Australasia, breaking the record set at the end of the 2014 NZB Ready to Run Sale.

The clearance rate is 74%, increasing from 68% on Day 1 of last year’s Sale. The median price has risen to $65,000, up from $60,000, which is an increase of 8%.

With 200 lots of the 397 lots catalogued today, the aggregate is $10,196,000 with the Sale on track to break the $20,000,000 mark for the first time ever.

NZB’s Managing Director Andrew Seabrook was pleased with the day’s results and is excited for the final day of selling.

“It has been a really encouraging start with the best day of selling in the Sale’s history recorded,” commented Seabrook. “We have had a strong international buying bench and the bidding in the ring has been very competitive. There is plenty of depth to the catalogue and there is still some really good buying to be found in the middle market.

“Traditionally Day 2 is stronger so we hope to build on today’s results with another good day of selling tomorrow.”

The top price of the day came at Lot 184 with the colt by Sebring purchased by Poletti Corporation from Sydney for $340,000, to be trained by Mauro Poletti and Amanda Turner. Offered by Prima Park, the colt is out of a stakes performed Danzero mare Brilliant Jewel and was knocked down to NZB’s Danny Rolston who was bidding on behalf of Poletti.

“He was Mauro and Mandy’s top pick from the Breeze Up videos,” commented Rolston. “They love the stallion and he inspected super. They are great supporters of the Sale and have had success of late."

The second top price of the day came early in the Sale when Lot 23 was purchased for $300,000 by NZB as agent. The colt was offered by Mana Park and is by New Zealand’s Champion Sire Savabeel out of Quatro (Rock of Gibraltar), a daughter of Group 1 winner My Brilliant Star (Copper Kingdom).

Hong Kong buyers were the most active on Day 1 of the Sale, with the collective Hong Kong buying bench purchasing 21 horses for $3,197,500. The leading buyer from Hong Kong was trainer Ricky Yiu having bought three horses for $500,000 today.

Also among the leading buyers from Hong Kong were Manfred Man, Willie Leung’s Magus Equine, David Ferraris, William Fung and Gary Yiu all spending over $200,000.

Today’s overall leading buyer was Mr Lang of the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Group, purchasing 14 horses for $744,000 destined for both China and New Zealand. The top price paid by Rider Horse was $180,000 for Lot 89, a colt by Sepoy out of stakes winning mare Ten Churros (High Brite).

“Mongolian Khan has had such a successful year and we wanted to come back here to buy another Mongolian Khan,” commented Mr Lang. “I have attended the Sale a number of times, I trust the quality of horses here and I would like to buy more.

“Joining me at the Sale are 20 associates from China as I have told them the kiwi horses are really good quality and they have also bought horses today.

“Next July is the New Zealand Bloodstock Cup in China that we would like to win with a horse from this Sale."

The second leading buyer overall for the day was Singapore trainer Shane Baertschiger who purchased four horses for a spend of $590,000, ranging in prices from $130,000 to $160,000.

“The quality of the catalogue is very good with lots of depth and I have missed out on a few nice horses as well,” commented Baertschiger. “This is one of the best sales I have been to in terms of quality and I will be back tomorrow with a few more on my shortlist.”

For the second year there was a live stream of the Sale into Macau after a successful debut last year. The Macau Jockey Club have again been active with six horses bought for a total of $270,500.

Australia is second to Hong Kong as the leading buying bench and a large number of Australian buyers have been participating in the Sale with the likes of Ciaron Maher, Gai Waterhouse, Blue Sky Bloodstock, Bill Mitchell, Bjorn Baker, Chris Waller, Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock and DGR Thoroughbred Services among the purchasers today.

The leading vendor by aggregate today was Riversley Park with 10 horses sold for a total of $1,389,000. Operated by Sam Beatson, Riversley Park’s highest price of the day was Lot 115, a colt by Smart Missile purchased by Hong Kong trainer Manfred Man for $260,000.

Leading the vendors by average (with three or more sold) was Prima Park with five horses sold for an average of $209,000, including the day’s top price.

The leading sire by average (with three or more sold) is currently Savabeel with five of his progeny selling for an average of $216,000.

Day 2 of the NZB Ready to Run Sale will commence at 12pm tomorrow at Karaka, with all lots being streamed live online at www.nzb.co.nz
