NZB Southern Filly of the Year Series Changes for 2016/17

8 July 2016

New Zealand Bloodstock together with the Canterbury Jockey Club and the Otago Racing Club announce changes to the format of the New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year Series for the 2016/17 season.

The proud sponsor of the coveted Southern Filly of the Year Series for more than 16 years, New Zealand Bloodstock has a strong commitment to encouraging a healthy and successful domestic racing industry. This Series provides opportunities for good fillies to earn valuable black type while racing in New Zealand, with the NZB Southern Filly of the Year title awarded to the three-year-old filly who succeeds in winning the most points after the completion of the four races in the Series.

The changes being made to the Southern Filly of the Year Series are to maximise the chances of the Series determining an outright winner. The potential still remains for tied winners but that prospect is greatly reduced under the changed format.

  • The point’s structure will now be seven (7) for a win, four (4) for a second and two (2) for a third. This is a change from the seven (7), three (3), one (1) structure that has applied previously. In the event of a dead-heat points will be divided equally between the dead-heaters.
  • The final leg of the Series, the New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes, will now, should two or more fillies have equal points following the running of that race, act as ‘a decider’. The following condition now applies to the Series: In the event of two or more fillies having equal points following the running of the fourth and final leg of the New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year Series the filly with the best finishing position in the New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes as determined by the judge and/or any Judicial process will be determined the winner of the Series.
