Speedy Cat Upstages Super Easy

18 March 2013

With the spotlight firmly on Karaka graduates Super Easy and Huka Falls in Friday night’s S$200,000 Sgp-3 Merlion Trophy (1200m), it was another graduate, Speedy Cat, that raced away with the honours in somewhat of an upset.

With Huka Falls (Align) only beaten once in his nine start career coming into the race and Super Easy already famous for his deeds in Singapore, they proved no match for Speedy Cat (Scardee Cat x Lane Cove) who won the seventh race of his 16 start career.

Trained by Alvin Tan, the four-year-old was ridden by jockey Manoel Nunes and settled at the back of the field after being slowly away and saved ground taking a rails run before bursting out of the pack and racing to a half-length victory.

Speedy Cat’s victory was Alvin Tan’s 100th as a trainer and his first at stakes level.

“This is my first Cup race and to get my 100th win is such a great thrill,” said Tan.

“We spoke about the race and thought there would be a lot of pace so I just said to the jockey to ride him quietly and let him finish off.

“I was really worried about Super Easy. We had lost to him a few times before and I knew what a good horse he is and Huka Falls is an up-and-coming horse who was getting weight from us.

“I will have a think about where to race next, but I would like to think about the KrisFlyer Sprint.”

Speedy Cat was bred by Grande Vue Lodge Syndicate & Waikato Stud and has now won over $500,000 for his owner the Alwin Stable. He was purchased by Stephen Autridge from Grande Vue Lodge at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2010 Karaka Select Sale for $5,000.
