Stakes Winner Ombre Rose Tops NZB’s National Broodmare Sale
13 May 2015
Stakes winning O’Reilly mare Ombre Rose fetched the highest price on the last day of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale.
Ombre Rose tops NZB National Broodmare Sale at $105,000. |
Catalogued at Lot 454, Ombre Rose was purchased for $105,000 by New Zealand Bloodstock’s Andrew Seabrook for a New Zealand-based client. Offered by Waikato Stud, the O’Reilly mare won three Listed races as a racehorse and was crowned New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year as a three-year-old. She is already the dam of Singapore stakes placegetter Room for Excuse (No Excuse Needed).
With 33 fewer horses catalogued in this year’s edition of the National Broodmare Sale, 128 were sold from the 187 catalogued with a 77% clearance rate. The total aggregate concluded at $787,000 with an average of $6,148 and a median of $2,000.
The leading vendor by aggregate for today, and the combined Sale, was Waikato Stud, selling 19 lots today for a total of $222,700 and 62 lots for $530,000 over the three days. Along with selling Ombre Rose, Waikato Stud was responsible for the third highest price of the day. Catalogued at Lot 462, Peep Show, another by O’Reilly, was purchased by Colverlea Farms for $30,000.
O’Reilly mares were popular today with eight of his daughters sold at an average of $21,556 for a total of $172,450 making him the leading sire by average (three or more sold) and aggregate for the broodmare session. Waikato Stud’s Ocean Park was the leading freshman sire at the National Weanling Sale, selling 11 horses at an average $37,227.
The top price for the combined Sale came on the first day during the National Weanling Sale with Bruce Perry Bloodstock purchasing Lot 112, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Suavito (Thorn Park) by Mastercraftsman, for $160,000 from Trelawney Stud.
Bruce Perry Bloodstock also purchased the leading lot of the mixed bloodstock sessions, paying $120,000 for Lot 403, stakes winning mare Dancer’s Tale from Curraghmore Stud, the leading vendor by aggregate of the National Weanling Sale.
Mark and Shelley Treweek of Lyndhurst Farm were the leading buyers for the combined Sale, purchasing five lots, all weanlings, for a total of $310,500. Their biggest purchases coming at Lot 213 and Lot 327, both purchased for $80,000. The former is by Tavistock who was the leading sire by average (three or more sold) of the National Weanling Sale, selling seven lots for an average of $37,357.
Trelawney Stud was the leading vendor by average (three or more sold) of the National Weanling Sale and replicated that result today selling all three entries in the National Broodmare Sale at an average of $13,333.
The leading vendor by average (three or more sold) for the combined Sale was Lime Country Thoroughbreds, selling five lots, all weanlings, for an average of $39,600, underpinned by their resident first season sire Niagara.
The overall Sale statistics recorded an increased aggregate of $4,085,100 from last year’s total of $3,920,400, with a healthy clearance rate of 80%, increasing from last year’s 79%. With 604 horses catalogued, 426 were sold at an average of $9,589 and a median of $2,775.
“The highlight of the three days has been the strong competition for the top weanlings,” commented NZB’s Co-Managing Director Andrew Seabrook. “It is a sale that I would like to see utilised to better effect in the future as there is definitely room in the market for more quality weanlings to be offered in the Sale.
“It provides a good opportunity to offer stock by stallions that are currently firing and a good avenue for promoting first season sires.
“The broodmare sale wasn’t quite so positive however, the lack of depth in the catalogue reflected the prices made in the ring today.
“Whilst competition at the top end was strong, the lower and middle market will only improve once domestic racing shows signs of growth.
“We thank buyers and vendors for their support and wish them all the best for the breeding season.”
