Successful Selling at Annual NZB South Island Sale

11 August 2006

New Zealand Bloodstock's South Island Sale of 2YOs and Mixed Bloodstock saw last year's record results improved upon once again, with the final Sale statistics showing solid growth from 2005.

A change of format for this year's Sale meant all two-year-olds were offered in a single sales session, instead of the previous Select and General session distinction. Overall the two-year-old session achieved a new record turnover, plus increases in clearance and the all-important median from last year's figures.

The clearance rate rose steadily over the course of the day to finish at a pleasing 76%, up significantly from 59% last year, with the median up a huge 45% from NZ$5,500 to NZ$8,000. Total takings were NZ$1,647,750 for the 132 two-year-olds sold, up 21% from NZ$1,359,800 for the 105 sold in 2005. The final average price for the two-year-olds was NZ$12,483, down a fraction from a combined average of NZ$12,950 last year.

Topping the Two-Year-Old Session were two lots who were each secured for NZ$50,000. Leading vendor Berkley Stud sold Lot 26 (Diamond Dane x Bonspiel) to Levin's David Haworth, while Double E Stable's Lot 88 (Faltaat x Lady Chanele) was secured by leading buyer of the Sale, Australian agent John Foote.

Foote purchased four lots for NZ$160,000 with the NZ$50,000 Faltaat colt out of Lady Chanele highlighting these. He is a half brother to Listed winner, and recent New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year Series winner, Ombre Rose (O'Reilly).

In spite of wintery Christchurch weather, a broad buying bench was assembled ringside at the Canterbury Agricultural Park with a good turnout of local buyers and strong participation from overseas buyers particularly from Singapore, Macau and Australia. Active international buyers included James Tan, Ray Cleaver, Shelley Hancox, Johnston Houlahan Bloodstock, Mick Dittman and others.

The top lot of the Sale came late in the day from the Racehorse Section when Chelandry Farm sold Lot 208 for $70,000 to Putaruru's Eska Farm. Named Kitty Bird (Catbird x Kiss in Vain), the four-year-old mare is half sister to, Group 1 AJC Emirates Galaxy Handicap winner, Proprietor (Belong to Me x Kiss in Vain), and is herself a winner in New Zealand.

In addition to the untried two-year-olds, the Sale also saw yearlings, racehorses, broodmares and untried horses on offer. These took the total turnover for the day to NZ$1,816,300, with an overall sale average of NZ$11,643, and clearance rate of 76%. This is an 8% increase from last year's average price of $10,826 and an increase from last year's clearance rate of 63%.

New Zealand Bloodstock Marketing and PR Manager, Petrea Vela, summed up the day's proceedings "It has been a successful day of selling in the South Island today, with the new record turnover achieved and considerable increases in the median and clearance rate. Heading into the Sale, we were encouraged by the quality of horses we had to offer and it is pleasing to see today's results have added to the steady growth we have seen at this Sale year upon year. "

Vendors and buyers can now look forward to the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale on November 21 & 22 at Karaka with the Breeze Ups at Te Rapa on October 26 & 27.
