Take-Off Tactics Work for Jetsetter
14 July 2014
A dashing front-running display has landed the well-travelled Jetset Lad (NZ) (Elusive City) his second stakes success with victory in the A$80,000 Tattersal’s Mile Handicap (1600m) at Doomben on Saturday.
Formerly trained in New Zealand by John Wheeler, Jetset Lad won the Group 3 Taranaki Cup in 2012 for the New Plymouth trainer and was transferred to ex-pat kiwi trainer Brian Smith earlier this season.
Having just his fourth start for Smith, Jetset Lad controlled the race from barrier rise for apprentice jockey Anthony Allen. The six-year-old kicked strongly in the straight to win in a very quick time of 1.34.55 just outside of Boys On Tour’s record of 1:34.4.
The son of Elusive City defeated stablemate and fellow Karaka graduate Kingdoms (NZ) (High Chaparral), who started the race-favourite in front of Jetset Lad.
Smith was positive about the horse's future with his next start looking to be the Group 3 Newcastle Cameron Handicap.
“The horse did a great job and it was a scintillating win as he was just outside of the track record. He seems to be enjoying his time in the sun” commented Smith.
“I have to give credit to John Wheeler who sent him over in marvellous order allowing him to run fourth in his last start and achieve the win today.
Saturday’s win was Jetset Lad’s sixth win from 49 starts, earning A$314,427 in prizemoney for his owners Mr C E J Stewart & Mr C J W Stewart.
Bred by Stewarts’ Racehorse Syndicate, Jetset Lad is out of Jetset Lass (Jetball), a half-sister to Singapore Group 3 winner Sky Frontier (Senor Pete). He is from the family dual Group 1 winner Perlin (Carnegie).
Jetset Lad was passed in at the 2009 Karaka Select Sale, offered by Goodwood Stud.
