Tarzino (NZ) Stars in Group 1 Rosehill Guineas
20 March 2016
Star three-year-old Tarzino (NZ) (Tavistock) added a second Group 1 win to his highly impressive season when he dominated the A$607,000 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) in Sydney on Saturday, heading a one-two finish for Karaka graduates.
The Mick Price-trained colt outstayed his rivals, surging to the lead down the straight and powering clear to win by a length and three-quarters. Fellow Karaka graduate Montaigne (NZ) (Road To Rock) was second, with the Oaks-winning filly Jameka (Myboycharlie) third.
"It's his first time in Sydney and there's always a doubt," Price said. "I thought it might have been a bit of a bogey day for him. But he showed what a really good stayer he is."
This was an impressive follow-up to his VRC Derby success at Flemington in November, and he will now try to complete a hat-trick of Group 1 wins in next month’s Australian Derby at Randwick.
"When he gets to the Derby distance he will be even better," jockey Craig Newitt said. "He is an out-and-out stayer and fast becoming one of the best horses I've ever ridden."
The Cambridge Stud-bred three-year-old has now had nine starts for four wins and three placings and has earned more than A$1.5 million in prize-money. He cost just $45,000 at the 2014 Select Sale, and a full-brother went through the ring in this year’s Premier Sale and fetched $400,000.
